Do you have Vonage or any other VIOP phone service? I was thinking about getting one of them but I don't know anyone who actually uses a VOIP phone service. Can you tell me anything about the quality and reliability of it?

I actually work for Vonage in the IT Department so I think I can answer some questions.
First off I will not be biased because I work there and will be very honest. I will tell you the good and the bad.
First off the good. There are a lot of pros to Vonage and the like. Some of them being that you can take you Vonage router anywhere in the world plug it into the internet and you have your phone with the same number. That's right you can go to India with your Vonage router and make calls to anyone you want to. Another thing is that any call you make from anywhere to the US is considered a local call so there is no roaming or long distance. Also you have unlimited calling in the United States.
As far as quality goes it is great but...... It all depends on your internet connection. Meaning that if you have a fast as heck internet connection there is no problem. If you have some type of broadband you are fine. However if you are downloading a bunch of large files (i.e. movies, music, and such) your quality will go down. If you have broadband internet you should be fine 99.9% of the time.
As far as reliability Vonage has never been out of service for more than 20 minutes in the past 5 years. But if the power goes out in your house your router will not be powered therefore you will not have phone service. Some Vonage routers come with battery backups I advise you get one of them.
Hope that helps.

That helps a lot.
Sounds like there should be no problems as long as I get a router with a battery back up. That was a lot of useful info. Thanks

A friend of mine lives in a rural area on the east coast and after they got Vonage she had all kinds of trouble with her phone and internet services.
