What would you do if you are forced to quarantine in the hotel for a week?

The newspaper reported that one hotel in Hong Kong is closed, and all those tourists who come into contact with the swine flu victim are quarantine in the hotel room. What would you do if you are forced to stay in the small hotel room for a week? Do you think you will feel like a prisoner?

I´d have to ask for help with entertainment. Books, a computer if posible, a deck of card, TV. Probably all of those things can be broght to me. I don´t think I´d feel like a prisoner with that.

Hi Marguicha, glad to see that you have a very positive attitude. I do not mind quarantine at home, but I hate to travel all the way overseas for a holiday and end up quarantine in a hotel. I mean, vacation leave is too precious to waste on quarantine in a hotel room. I guess I will not feel as positive as you are. Like your attitude a lot. I think the Hong Kong government is really paranoid, they order the closure of the whole hotel, quarantine all the hotel employees and guests.

Hi Linyi, agree that it is as bad as a house arrest. Watching TV is perhaps the only option, I doubt hotel rooms have any internet access. And using the computer in the business area or internet cafe will incur costs. Similarly calling friends and families are expensive too. Those tourists are so far away from home, all calls are charged at international rate. Pity them, they go there for shopping and eating, and now they cannot step out of the hotel room.

As long as I wasn't charged for it, I'd make the most of it. I'd relax, watch some movies, soak in the tub, read books I always bring, etc. Why make yourself miserable? It's something they feel has to be done so you may as well make the best of it.

Haha Dragon, that is one way to look at it. Next time before I go for holiday, I jolly well make sure the travel insurance covers the quarantine too. It must be pretty disappointing to waste a holiday trip quarantine in the hotel room. Anyway, it is for the greater good of the society. And hopefully the food and accommodation are paid for by the government.

As long as the hotel had wi-fi, and there was food coming in for me and others who were also subject to this quarantine, then I would honestly be fine. I'd have a bed and my computer, which is about the limit of what I do anyway if I am not at work. Of course I'd be upset that I were missing work because we don't really have anyone to cover my shifts. Also, I am supposed to visit someone this coming weekend, and if quarantine were to start today, it would cover all of the time that I have set aside for my trip.

Hi Valenas, I like your positive attitude. If I have to take my vacation leave and travel to another part of the world for holiday, I will be very upset to stay in the hotel for a week. It's a waste of time and money. If I am on a business trip, I will not mind so much. Since the company is paying me salary for the duration of the quarantine.

Hi Valenas, it happened once to my two colleagues. I arranged for them to attend a training program in Thailand. That was an international paint inspection training, very specialised and not available in Singapore. After the training, just before they flew back, the Thai international airport was taken over by the opposition party and closed down for a week. These two guys called the company. The management decided that they should stay in the hotel room till the airport reopened, it was too risky for them to step out, there were demonstrations every day, and the supporters of two political parties did fight. Those two guys really enjoyed themselves on company's budget.

I think I will be ok. I would just lie down and watch TV or surf the net inside the airconditioned room. Well, I hope they have cable TV,wi-fi and free room service anyway. I like staying in hotel rooms and during those times that I did, I always felt sad when it was time to leave. I guess it would be like vacation for me if I am quarantined in a hotel room for a week.

Hi Rainegurl, not many people like to stay in hotel room, especially when they are on a holiday to Hong Kong. Most of my friends who went Hong Kong spent as little time as possible in the hotel room. They spent all the time shopping and eating. I guess you will be happier if the Hong Kong government pays you to stay for a week and provides all the food for you.

one week quarantine for me in a hotel is okay. As long as there's good food, cable TV and internet connection. i can live with that! :)

Hi Sweetseoul, glad to hear that you are able to take life easy, and to enjoy yourself. It's true that food is free, provided by the Hong Kong government, but not sure about the quality. TV is a given! There is internet connection, provided you bring along your laptop. I will be very disappointed to have the holiday plan spoilt in this way. It is more like a prison to me if I am forced to stay inside the room for so long.
