Why did my washing machine stop working?

We just moved into a new house (not new, but new
for us) and have
received an older washing machine as part of
the package. The machine worked for two days
and then stopped spinning out. Now it washes
and refuses to drain the water so I can no longer
use it.
I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix a
washing machine. I don't have the money to
call a repair man.
It was working fine for the first two days
but now it fills with water, churns for ten minutes
and then quits.
I have to drain the water out or let it stand.
Was hoping there would be some frugal way
to fix this without spending money.
Thanks for the suggestions and any tips.

From what I know, a washing machine stops churning if the load gets to heavy for it. Maybe you can try to put in a lighter load and see if it will work ok, after all, it is an old washing machine so it might not be as powerful as it used to be. Another possibility is that the threads from the clothes was caught in the "propeller" that is why it can no longer turn. Small amounts for two years can be a lot. About the draining, maybe there is something blocking the passage of the water that is why it doesn't drain. Maybe you have friends who are good with tickering things and would be willing to check out your washing machine without charge.

If you happen to be a member of Freecycle, post a "wanted" post asking if someone knows anything about washers and might be able to help. It can't hurt at all. You can also ask if anyone has a working washer they need a home for (after you've looked to see if someone is offering one). I've gotten a lot of nice things through them. Or check Craigslist to see if someone there is offering a trade to do repairs that you might be able to bargain with.

I encountered this problem before. I think it's not broken. Is it automatic? I think you should read the manual.

This is just a thought....It very well might be because it isn't sitting level on the floor. I know when I got my new washing machine the same thing happened, and it turned out it was because it wasn't level. If you don't own a level to check it out with, take a glass measuring cup and fill it to a line with water, and if it's not truly level you will see it off it's mark. If it isn't level, there are big screws on the feet of the washer and you just turn them to adjust them till it's level.
Also, it might be something as simple as the belt being too loose for the agitator to agitate. Here's a link to a couple of sites that explain the workings of a washing machine. They are all pretty basic as to how they work. I've fixed mine myself many times before the motor itself burned out. (Then, and only then, did I feel I had to buy something different.) Anyways, you might find an answer in one of these places that are geared to fixing it yourself. Good luck!!

Try going to another setting, like "gentle" or "permanent press" and see if it works on the spin there. It may just be part of the switch going out. I do not usually need expensive repairmen, as I have a friend who will fix things for me. I do pay him, but he is really cheap. He is blind, and earns some of his living this way.

Hello beauty queen. I am so sorry to know that your washing machine is not working well. I am not good at fixing machines at all, so if something is wrong with one of them, I usually call the shop for help where we bought the stuff because they offer after-sale service for free within a certain period of time. Even if it is long after that, they will still come to our door to fix it once called. I wish you good luck to get some very helpful information for the fixing of the machine. Take care, friend.

I asked my hubby since he's worked on our old washing machine when we had it. He said it could be either a loose belt or a broken belt OR it could be that the gears have stripped out and are in need of replacing. I wish you the best of luck on this beautyqueen.

Besides being cheeky & saying the washing machine doesn't like you...Maybe the drain pipe is clogged...I had this happen when I washed a mat & it fell apart. We had to take the drain pipe off & clean it out with the hose & then get everything out that we could with our hands where the drain pipe attaches too. I would maybe try this to see if that's the problem before calling in a repair man.

A brilliant suggestion! And it could very well be what happened.
Cause one morning it was working fine and that afternoon it was not.
So maybe something got stuck in there. Had not thought of that.

In my experience, having had that happen to me several times in my life, I would first be sure that the drain hose is attatched properly. It has to go up from the drain hole at the bottom of the washer to work. I don't know why, but it does. Next, I would check to see if it clogged at all. One time, a sock was stuck in my drain hose and needless to say, water wasn't getting through at all. Third, check to see if the washer is level. Sometimes, if it isn't level, it won't work right. Fourth, try running it empty to see what it does, it could be that the load was too big.Another possible thing that may work is to unplug it for about five minutes and then plug it back in and run it empty or with a small load. Another thing that it could be is that the belt underneath needs replacing. If the belt is no longer good, you should be able to buy one at a store that sells washers, and the belt should come with instructions on how to change it. The only other thing that comes to mind right now is that when you shut the lid, there is a little button that is depressed. If the button is not depressed, generally, the washer will not spin out. If for some reason the little piece that depresses the button is broken or the button has somehow been pushed down out of the piece's reach, your washer would automatically stop when it got to the spin cycle.
I am no expert, but I have had all of the above happen at one time or another with various washers I have had. I hope that this information is useful to you and helps you to figure out the problem.

I agree with learn2earn. Looks like your washing machine needs to be replaced. It may cost more than to repair it but in the long run, you will not have to spend anymore for future repairs or whatsoever which is a likely occurrence if you settle for that ole thing. I also don't think you can fix this yourself unless you have some experience in repairing electrical stuffs :)

sounds like it's not changing cycle.
i'm not sure how you'd DIY that.probably needs a new sensor of some kind.
but i can say-check craiglist for a used one.sometimes people give them away on there for nothing.
