Are horoscopes and zodiac signs have anything to do with marriages ?

Hi everybody, Do not have much idea as to how horoscope and the zodiac signs are treated or have their bearing in other countries but in a typical Hindu family in india so far as tying a marital relation matching of the horoscope of the boy and the girl is almost a must. But paradoxically many such arranged marriage do not last more than 6 months and one year at the best. Their horoscope matched denotes that their zodiac signs too match to be husband and wife in future. Now my million dollar question is why so many marriages those were solemnized without tallying the horoscopes and zodiac signs are celebrating silver jubilee of their marriage and why after so much taking care of before marriage ones eroded like the land mass near the summer river do? Would you blame the pundits who made the horoscopes, the skeptical parents, the system or much the less SUPERSTITION? DO you think the zodiacs are genuine or the horoscope makes any sense, or what is this eating the so called educated folks up thing? And we are not happy seeing any marriage or relation dying a premature death. Please share your views. Rajib 04.05.09

Horoscopes and Zodiac signs are exactly what you called them, superstitions. They're not facts, they're not God-related beliefs that call on faith, they're just some time calculations and cosmic design that were interpreted by man. I know people who have really bad horoscope combination but are very happy with their relationships - you know what their secret was? EFFORT. They worked hard to keep their relationship smooth. It's not true that love will fuel you relationship, you actually have to fuel that love with acts of kindness and with more acts of love :) Thanks for the response on my discussion!

I did not know that there was such crimes committed because of dowries and superstitions... But I am glad to know that people like you are standing up against them. I hope you knock some sense into other people so that more would be spared from such atrocities.

Hi Oyenkai, I really got moved by your radical thoughts. I wished even if one third of our Indian educated parents had this in their blocked head lots of lives and property would have been saved. There are many cases of dowry and dowry related murders and above all this horoscope thing. Thank you very much.

Because I'm an atheist, I'd say that if you are in the quest of knowing the reality, then the answer is a flat 'NO'. But it doesn't end here. There is a psychological perspective to this. May be, when a couple is 'tested positive' by horoscopes and the like for an alliance, it may send an emotional signal to the brain that "Since the Almighty has approved of this relation, there won't be too many hurdles in our path." In fact I feel that is what religious practices in Hinduism, or the concept of horoscope and zodiac signs for that matter is all about. Your mind is void of all negative doubts of the future. In other words, your brain is full of positive vibes and you start trusting your partner believing that it's the Divine Order. And what else can be the best basis for a successful marriage?

Hi cannibal, very well elaborated. Yes that could be the reason for in the past people were mostly illiterate and would not understand the psychological thing and basically when talk of horoscope and zodiacs it is the release of negative energy and entry of the positive one as believing that it was all divine set. Thanks a lot.

I do not believe in them per se. But, many are believing this thing that is why horoscope prevails over time. I used to believe in it when I was young and the thing is its very unreliable in many times I read my own fortune. I think the one who writes on it is really making gunshot forecasts and I think many times it is not as accurate as it should be.

Personally I do not believe in them. I have no doubt that there are die hard supporters but I have no intention in looking for a fight with them. Even though there may be some truth there are too many things which need to be taken into account. Thus any calculations made will have errors in them. The errors are not seen because factors like the exact locations of the heavenly bodies at the moment of birth are not taken into account. If the readings are accurate then people born on the same date and same time would have the same life. all the best, rosdimy

Hi rosedimy, Yes, there are die hard believers and would never get convinced that all these are fake. Yes with accurate calculation it might be possible to foretell but there are more fake astrologers and least original. Thanks a lot

Rajib- Well dear friend, I do use the Zodiacs (both) for some things, but I wouldn't necessarily say my life revolves around them. It's more that they come into play in so many things that it's hard to ignore the affects of planets in houses, etc. It's no excuse mind you for what a person of free will chooses to do, but I do see some relevance in marriages. Let me use myself as an example, not to toot my own horn, but to provide a basis for my thoughts. I'm a cancerian on traditional zodiac, and a water rat in Asia. My husband is also a cancerian, but is an earth horse. On the traditional we are very well suited, but advised as too opposite on the Asian. Because of our Feng Shui numbers, we're complete opposites so what is wealth corner for him is not mine. So, I've painstakingly put things in each of our areas that attract for him, and repel for me, and vice versa. Now, back to the relationship. Though my husband and I are likes on one, opposites on another doesn't mean one is best or right. Or that either is wrong. We have things that naturally align us, such as preferring the hermit life, rather than the spotlight. In the Asian he's a care free spirit, where I'm the grounded home body. Which is good, because we balance each other out. So, in answer to your question, I'm not sure I'd blame the horoscopes or the parents. I think I'd chalk it up to some people are made for each other and some are not. Namaste-Anora

Hi Anora, I can not help appreciating your deep study on the subjects that you comment on. You have a deep study on Indian rituals and practices. Well, I feel if at all the Indian astrology is all correct there must be some misinterpretation on it and those who prepare the horoscopes are not competent and therefore I had once raised the question as to which should be our actual birth. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Rajib! A very valid point raised indeed and this finds greater relevance in the current day and age where there are many 'designer babies' in our community[some people look at the stars and opt for the Caesarian section to be done on a particular day].Well, first of all I should admit that my marriage is an arranged one, based on the tallying of horoscopes. We do have this system of arranged marriages based on this criteria in modern times too.Anything starts with belief and if we do not completely believe in it it is still alright,it would work well for the concerned party. When we are halfhearted the trouble arises.Sometimes, with the best of intentions, there arises mistakes in horoscope matching and marriages do fail with or without this.Basically, there is alot of intolerance within marriages these days and that is the main reason.Horoscope matching is not the be all and end all of everything;it is one way of getting alliances finalised in the arranged marriage system.I would not call it total superstition but excessive reliance on the stars would only appear so.It is just a criteria,[ to start with] in our cases. We have so many other considerations and ultimately if there is a genuine will to see the marriage succeed then it does succeed.Without horoscope matching there may be silver weddings. THere , too the cases of failures are on the increase. So, I feel it is only a question of increased intolerance. And I have also heard one profound statment from an eminent astrologer. It would sound best in my regional language but you may not know it .THe essential meaning goes like this'Above all stars there is One Almighty God'.'It rhymes beautifully when repeated in Tamil. So, he said that too much of belief in astronomical signs would lead us nowhere. So, as long as people have the right sense of values and give the sanctity thatthe institution of marriage rightly deserves, marriages would succeed with or without matching of horoscopes.

Incidentaly,I have heard that this horoscope is also indicative of a person's characteristics.Sign alignment shows a bit of compatibility criteria. And many judegements are based on the astrologer's intuitive thinking and indepth knowledge that is based on statistics To tell you a small thing I still do believe that there was something in our horoscopes that has made us stay all these years together because we are totally opposite in temeperament.I have also written an article on this in AC ;if youa re inclined please peep into it and give me your comments there. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1560739/how_diametrically_opposite_partners.html?cat= However, as I said earlier, in these modern days it may not work. Moreover, there is no certainty about the person's real capacity for accurate study and analysis of zodiac signs too[people tend to think too much of themselves even when they do not have the skill it warrants and it is misleading] So, I still feel that marriages are made in Heaven and God in the form of good sense should be in the minds of the partners who get into marriage.

I used to think like that and sure thing in the beginning it worked as horoscopes said but I learned that we shouldn't rely on it 100% I am leo and hubby is capricorn I never thought I would have such a blissful marriage when I knew I fell for him I was worried at first because horoscopes said it won't work but at the time I thought 'well I had bad experiences before, whether the horoscope said it's a match or not. so this time I will follow my heart' we have been married for almost 9 years now I still read horoscope :) I used to compare forecast from a lot of sites. if all says almost the same then it's most likely true Hubby of course always laughs at it

Hi, the same happened with me too actually I am a capricorn and my wife is a scorpio. If the horoscope had been consulted there was no possibility of our marriage but fortunately it came to pass that I told I am too a scorpio and my original horoscope got misplaced and there was no complain as according to them if both are scorpio it is the best pair. I do not know but feel there is a lot of hair under the carpet.

Yes, of course planets have influence on your marriages too.Planets govern our lives.Astrology never fails, only the astrologers do. Unfortunately there are not many who can predict the future fairly accurately. So it is better to keep away from astrologers.lol.

@krajibg: It is a difficult situation indeed. It is not easy to shake the faith and belief of those parents. If you could convince that no astrologer is perfect (I mean in the present days) may be they could understand.

horoscopes are just made by fortune tellers but believing on it it depends on a person but for me zodiac signs are just nothing to be believed in, what i believe is God only :) As for supertitions are a mere reflection of a mirror it can be real or not. Involving marriage in horoscopes are not capable for it has nothing to do with it.

Hello my friend Rajib Ji, Well, I do not know about whom you are talking about, but great marriages, other than arranged one breaks befor night comes. In short, what you think, even after seeing signs The importance is of time, what time the baby was born to touch the earth, the time recorded may not be correct, and postions of all Zodiac signs keeps changing. It happened with our Lord Rama as well, Sita suffered for 14 long yrs in exile. Late Indira Gandhi had love marriage with Firoz gandhi, it broke. Recently Nayyar's marriage with some english woman failed. When we think about these things, we think of ideal conditions. Zodiacs signs play an important roll, as we start from your home town , keep going towards kanya Kumari we find skin color change, it is because of shining Sun. I have graet belief.

I think the whole idea of the zodiac having something to do with people and their behavior is very interesting. I don't think there is a way to prove with certainty that there is anything to it all though.

hai krajib, i don't think that horoscopes and zodiac signs are realy essential to get marriy. it is totaly a superstition. i have noticed many couples who are enjoying their married life whithought any obstacles and i know that they donot believe all these. the horoscopes is an earning mediator to those so called pandits who dominate total hindu community by their own thoughts. a good relation, a loving attitude or understanding can be everything for a long lasting married life.what u did in your marriage time?

I do believe or you should say....made to believe after my marriage that these things should be matched, and for better life of both, it should be considered, but yes, by my perosnal experience i can also add that i have or WE both have made our best efforts to carry on our married life peacefully and successfully and we are happily together for 12 years now, though the Jyotish had clearly mentoined that this marriage wont work .... So giving practical solution, if you have another choice before you, and not commited to someone before matching horoscopes then better match it, and if you have already decided whom you have to marry, so stick to your commitment....

well, though u are right in this matter...but still the match horoscopes for these increase the chances of couples being compatible as their liking and habits come out to be almost same..!! more so, EVERYTHING WE DO, THERE IS PLANETARY INVOLVEMENT IN THAT..!! so, on the whole matching such stuff MATTERS, atleast to me.. alongside this, TRUST AND EFFORT MAKE IT COMPLETE..

I read my horoscope every day as well as that of my children and ex husband but I do it just for fun. I don't believe the stars can affect our lives. Those that match people up according the their horoscopes could be making mistakes, as people aren't accurately described by star charts. Another reason arranged marriages might fail is that there is no love there. They don't decide to marry because they love the person, it's just convenience or custom. Although I have heard of a few arranged marriages, mostly in the China in the old days, that have lasted happily for decades.

Astrology is a science that is far more complicated than the horoscopes we read in magazines. I have a friend who is an expert at doing people's charts and usually no two charts are alike although the people may have the same zodiac signs; it has something to do with how the planets were aligned when they were born, therefore a couple's compatibility cannot be measured just by the two star signs. Compatibility like attraction is far more complex and cannot always be explained. In my opinion, if two individuals share ideals, values, have love and respect for one another it is irrelevant what sign they are.

Hello krajibg!!! Well I am from Nepal and from a hindu family. Some checking of jata or horoscope(you call it kundali in hindi) is done here too. I don't know how they do, and what matches and what doesn't. But the checking of it once is surely done... This is really amazing thing that they predict our future with this. And I am sad to hear that the things they tell mostly come true. I feel like how bounded our life is and we cannot get what we want even though we try when it is written to not get that in the horoscope. Don't you feel so... There seems to be certain combination of horoscope as I have read somewhere, like which pair of zodiac signs will have nice relationship and which pair doesn't. I had got a book from my friend a year ago, with these information, in which the love relation between each zodiac sign was given. I read the book and mostly I found it true in my case too. Surprise to read this, and also felt sad after reading that. As, I mentioned above, how constricted our life is if these things are true.... I believe 60% in such zodiac signs and still I can't accept the 40%. I look the zodiac signs and the luck daily, and mostly it becomes true as mentioned and still there are the days, when the things don't happen as mentioned.... Nice discussion, krajibg...Keep posting...Good luck
