Are magazines a waste of money?

Magazines are for sale in all supermarkets these days. The price of some of them is quite high and everyones interests are there. Ladies magazines are especially popular for teenagers and women. A man might like a magazine about cars. Children probably like magazines about things they have seen on television.
If you were to buy a magazine what topic would you choose?
Do you think buying magazines is a waste of money? Why? Why not?

If there is a magazine that you really like to read, the best option is to get a subscription to it. It makes it much cheaper. They can do this because the supermarket or book store doesnt have to make their money off of it!
If you do get a subscription, it is nice to split the cost with a friend and then share the magazines. That way you can enjoy them but it costs you even less!
If you have the time, another good option is to look through the magazines at the library. That way it is completely free!
I, personally, have always enjoyed National Geographic. My grandmother always bought us a subscription to the kids version - 'World'. Now I like them both!

I think that most magazines are a waste of money. All they do is talk about celebrity gossip. There are exceptions to this rule, however.Notably, National Geographic,US News and World Report,Mother Jones and my personal favorite Mouth magazine, which is a little disability magazine. I also read poets and writers, other then those five I think that magazines are a entire waste of your hard earned money.

i don't think so. I'm fond of buying magazines related to houses, parenting and entrepreneurs every pay day.i happened to read very important details there related to my work. it's also my outlet. i go to the malls just to buy magazines.it's not a waste of money for i sell it a year after.

That's a smart idea, flagella08. They can be sold back to a used book store.

I don't think buying a magazine is a waste of money but I do think that some magazines are a waste of paper. I enjoy buying magazines on topics of interest to me and like to have them around my house to keep me updated in these areas. I like magazines such as Ceramic Monthly, Yoga Journal and Real Simple. There is also a professional journal I like to keep up with called Reading Teacher.

Hi there maximax8!
I used to subscribe to a lot of magazines and journals. After a while, I found it impractical especially that some of the magazines already have versions of their magazines online. That's beneficial for me. Some of my friends also still subscribe so sometimes, what I do is to borrow from them instead. I won't say it is a waste of money but to some extent, it can be impractical.

If you like to take time out for a good read then a magazine is worth the money but if you'd rather do something else in your spare time, then they're an unneccessary waste of money, as they just record daily life and short stories... nothing that you can't seek elsewhere.
I used to buy a lot of mags but I don't buy them these days. I use the computer. Brightest Blessings.

Well, it depends. People tend to buy magazines about things that interest them as you point out. For the person who buys them, they are certainly worth. My husband likes to buy computer magazines. He reads them from cover to cover and often re-reads them too. They are worth for him.
I don't buy magazines regularly but every once in a while I will buy one. Specially if I have to be someplace where I will be waiting for some time. I sometimes buy psychology today.

Depends on the Magazine. I like Cat Fancy--I enjoy reading it every month. Seems like money well spent to me. I have in the past ordered Cross Stitching or Crochet magazines that had patterns in them--it was cheaper to get a magazine full of patterns than to buy individual patterns I liked. Also some women's magazines have coupons in them to off set the cost of the magazine, like the ALL For You magazine usually has a lot of coupons some are even good enough that you save more from coupons than you paid for the magazine.

The only magazines I buy are Craft related, Card making, papercraft and cross stitch. I buy them from the supermarket because they are often slightly cheaper than from a newsagents and more readily available. The only reason I don't take out a subscription for them is because I don't buy the same ones regularly. I tend to keep them for inspiration and ideas
I think the TV, celebrity, 'true life' fashion and home decorating ones are a waste of money and paper. The only other magazines in the house are computer related that my son occasionally buys or the Readers Digest which we've subscribed to for many years.

some magazines are to much money. I buy one every now and then for $2.99 but know higher. Gardening is one topic and Native American Indians would be another. Victorian magazine from the past days would be a nice one.

I have a basement full of magazines, and my friends think it's a waste of money... but there are a few things that they don't realize:
Magazines and journals represent the absolutely cutting edge of current thinking. You can find information on the Internet, but you have no way to verify the accuracy of what you're reading. You can look up a topic in the library, but the books you're reading might be 5 years old or more. The only way to keep current and with vetted, checked and double checked information (and still open to public review in the form of letters to the editor)... is magazines.
I buy magazines to stay on top of topics I am interested in. $24/year for a woodworking magazine is a lot cheaper than a $60 coffee table sized textbook on the subject, and a magazine has better photography and more current ideas in it. There is no better way to get up to speed in a topic you're interested in than magazines. Like Photography. Or how to build a computer using parts available in stores today. Or whatever.
There are of course wastes of money. If I'm not interested in a subject than THAT magazine would be a waste of money. If you are not interested in anything, than all magazines would be a waste of money. If you prefer to get your info from a library or online your information could be outdated or just plain wrong.
My big question is: Once I've read a magazine, is it worth keeping around, or should I be recycling them?!? I have trouble throwing out something I paid good money for. Some people read a magazine once and throw it out. Some read a book once and throw it out. I keep both around so I can refer to them again, or let friends borrow them.

In my opinion, magazines are not a waste of money.Through magazines,we can harvest a lot that we may not get from the internet. As it known to all, most of the magazines are designed on purpose.Unlike the internet, you acquire a lot on the same time, especially something you don't really want.So long as you wanna acquire knowledge ,i thingk reading magazines is one of the most convenient way to get what you want.

I think different people will have different opinions about it. Although I seldom buy magazines today, but I can't say it is wasting money. Some people still prefer to buy magazines. People need different methods to feel relaxed.
I love China

It depends of which magazine and what are the contents being discussed. Definitely we can't measure the value of what a magazine is. There are some magazines that are very much informative, this I would say if the price is high will be good enough. Now there are magazines that will attract you on the front cover itself, so you have a tendency to buy them not knowing the content is senselesss. The topic that I would be chooosing is all about touching ones life or life itself, because I believe it has a very very long discussion and it does not stop. Also the next topic that I would be choosing is about knowledge.

I do not really buy magazines on a regular basis. I only buy once every three months so I guess that is not a waste of money. I do not collect magazines because most of them are expensive and I want to spend my money in more important things. When I was in elementary my great grandmother always buy comics about 3 to 5 pieces a day. The price were still lower compared to prices today. I think I will not make magazine collection as a hobby. But I have nothing against those who collect magazines as long as they can afford to buy one and collect. I prefer magazines about celebrities because I like to read stories about them. But I do not care too much. I just want to be inspired by stories especially those that came from rugs then to riches. I would rather use the internet if I want to know anything about something. I think some people are just wasting their money on magazines if they already have computers but still collecting magazines and just stacking them in their room. If magazines are for collections and they are educational then I guess they are worth my penny. But then as I have said all things are available in the internet now so no need to buy.

No I don't think magazines are a waste of money except for the ones that only have gossip about celebrities like about their relationships and like pictures of them without makeup and stuff. But I think there are some really good magazines out there like Wired and SEED that have information about new technology and stuff that I think is cool. I also like Guitarworld because it has a lot of cool artists and good excercises for guitar players but I think that it depends on what you like on whether or not magazines are a waste of money or not.

i think so, at this time... because most people are in financial crisis.
i do love reading, and before i used to buy magazines but not those that are just out of the market, i buy those that are otudated already, like those a year old magazines, they are still new and i can buy a piece for only 1/3 of the cost if it was new. there are a lot of things to be learned from mags, for one, good housekeeping have a lot of good lessons and tips written there, parenting, cooking, housekeeping, etc. my kids also uses the magazines for their project, so old ones are good, once im done reading it, and have taken some of the articles that i want to keep, i let my kids cut whatever they need and whatever they want from the mags.
but now, since we are on a tight budget, i cant buy magazines anymore, even those in sale. as it seems like a waste of money now for me.
