Naming countries

I played a game on the Internet yesterday that another My Lot user told people about. It involved naming countries of the world. I would imagine that Europeans would be able to name almost all the countries in Europe, Asians all the countries in Asia, and Americans all the countries in the Americas. I know all the countries in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Australasia but I am weak on the names of all the countries in Africa. Can you name all the countries in Africa that you would like to visit? Can you name all the countries you would like to visit in your own continent?

That is not easy. I can't even name all the countries I visited without giving serious thought to it, as some have been divided up, Yugoslavia, some have changed name, Czechoslovakia, and others, well like Yemen, I think was named a year after I was there. As for the countries in Africa, and South America, I am in trouble. To say Americans know all the countries in the Americas is overstating it I think. Most Americans can't even name their 50 States, let alone say where they are. I used to be strong in geography at school, but now, I'm not so good.

Hello my friend Mipen. I know that you have visited many different countries in the world in your lifetime so far. Thanks for saying you would have to give serious thought to name all the countries you have visited. Name changes are quite a problem. I live in Europe so I have kept up to date with the name changes. I have been to Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia as well as to the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Australia has a manageable number of states and territories but America with its 50 states in a challenge. Thanks for your wonderful response.

I've tried those games online for the US and for Africa!the US one was a puzzle type game, you were given the outline shape of the relevant state and had a number of tries to put it where it belonged on the map! some of them were easy to place, but the geometric shaped ones in the midwest weren't the easiest to position having never been there, but it was a fun tool for a geography lesson! I reckon I could find most places I'd like to visit

I am so glad that you have tried these sorts of games because they are so enjoyable. When I was a teenager I had a talking globe with an American accent. It had geographic questions and marks out of ten. I still find naming all the American states challenging. I am likely to know most of the ones on the east and west coasts but not in the middle. It is great you are able to find all the places you wish to travel to in the future.

First of all I don't know if it is fair to say Americans would know America that well. Forget about Central America... try to name the countries of South America! Yes, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina and Peru are easy ones but what about Guyana (and French Guyana), Siriname, Ecquador, Columbia, Chile, Boliva, and Paraguay. And I probaby missed a few. Add in the countries of Central America... Ecuador, Hondorus, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama (again I am sure I missed a few) and those I remember because of the fighting there in the late '70s. As for African countries. WHOOOOOSH. Algeria Niger Angola Gabon Nigeria Benin Gambia Reunion Botswana Ghana Rwanda Burkina Faso Guinea Sao Tome & Principe Burundi Guinea-Bissau Senegal Cameroon Kenya Seychelles Cape Verde Lesotho Sierra Leone Central African Rep. Liberia Somalia Chad Libya South Africa Comoros Madagascar Sudan Congo (Brazzaville) Malawi Swaziland Congo (DRC, Zaire) Mali Tanzania Cote d'Ivoire Mauritania Togo Djibouti Mauritius Tunisia Egypt Morocco Uganda Equatorial Guinea Mozambique Western Sahara Eritrea Namibia Zambia Ethiopia Zimbabwe That is the whole list and if I took some time I would have gotten most of them (if I didn't look them up) and for the record I will say the Western Sahara is not it's own country... but I am favorable to Morocco so...... and a few years ago the country of the Ivory Coast changed it's offical name to Cote d'Ivoire. Darn French.... Asia... I would really struggle. I would only know the countries that are large. Now what ones would I like to visit on my continent... that I have not already. Canada, Costa Rica, Belize, Brazil... those are the ones that come to mind in that order right away. I assume Bermuda is part of North America so I guess I would have to add them too. All the other Carribean counties (Jamaica, Bahamas, Puerto Rico [yes I know not a country], Cayman Islands, St. Everything [Thomas, Johns, Maartin, Croix], Guadalupe, Antigua, Barbados, etc... I have already seen. And yet have never been to Canada. Weird. Thanks Zelo

I live in Europe and I know the other European countries quite well. I have visited many of the other European countries and I hope to visit the rest of the countries in the future. I have already made plans about the countries that I haven't visited yet and I am thinking about visiting more than one country at at time. I also know the Asian countries quite well, because I have been very interested in Asia and I really want to go on a trip to Asia in the future. I know most of the African countries, too and I have learned them online (through online games). I know the Americas relatively well but I am weak on the Middle East.

I am ashamed to admit that I am not good in geography. I can't name all the countries in Africa. I cannot name also all the countries in my continent. Poor me! What I know more are the provinces in my country.

I could name all of the countries of the world with the help of an encyclopedia!! Im not very good with the countries of Africa or Eastern Europe. I think a lot of the stems from the fact that they have changed in my lifetime! I have learned names of countries while I was in school, but some of those countries no longer exist! I think that makes it even harder to name them all. Africa is probably the continent that is changing the most right now. I cannot name all of the countries I would like to visit - that list is always growing! At the top of the list are Iceland and Romania.

Thanks for your excellent response. It is fantastic that you have pointed out many countries have changed their names, like Yugoslavia for example. In that region I have been to Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro. Czechoslovakia split into half. It is now called the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Some cities have changed their names like St Petersburg used to be called Leningrad. My travel wish list is also growing. I loved visiting Romania and it was quite a delightful surprise. I would adore a trip to Iceland.

when i as a student in middle school about 14 years old . i have been teached a lot about geography. know many countries in different contient. but just see the map, and as that age, just know the name of the counties. the number of population, the kinds of mineral in different counties. and the cilmate and the kinds of animal in these counties. but, i just to memory this, not know this. i hope one day i can go to these counties. amrica have many counties. and many of these had just built up . and so poor that not many person take attention to them. i think may be the turmoil let the people don't travel these counties. i just know a little about our continent. most of counties around my country are not so rich.

Africa, hmm, it is tough but let me try: Zairo, Cango, Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Senegal, Ethopia & Sudan. That is it, I remember only up to these. Let me see if I can name countries from my continent: India, Pakistan, SriLanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Java, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Maldiv, Barma, Saudi Arab, UAE, Turki. I think that is it, I have named almost every country.
