When it comes to saving some money during this economic downturn, what do you prefer to use to go to work? If driving own car, you will need to buy gas and pay parking fees. All these expenses are quite expensive. But, if you are using public transport, you don't need to spend all these extra expenses. But, using public transport need to wait. Do you willing to wait?

It is always better to travel in a public transport. If you avail the facility of public transport, you save yourselves from the hassles of driving and negotiating through heavy traffic and accidents too. No doubt, driving your own vehicle gives you some kind of flexibility in timings, yet it is not hazard free. Given the choice, I prefer to go by public transport, such as Metro trains, as much as possible.
Good Post!

It is advocated for people to live a low-carbon life. So it is very helpful for people to take a public transportation. I wish more people would think of protecting our environment by reducing emissions from private vehicles.

I have been owning and driving my own cars for the past 28 years, and through all these years, I have weathered the economic storms and several recessions. In this current recession, life will still be the same for me as far as owning and using cars is concerned. It is hard to give up driving after so many years at it. You are absolutely correct that not driving but using public transportation cuts down lots of extra expenses. Driving is never cheap whether in a recession or otherwise. What I can do to save money is to cut down unnecessary trips, go out less often especially on weekends, park less and pay less parking fees, and use cheaper petrol if I can. Actually I have already done some of these and achieved some of these savings. Once a while, I also decide to keep the car at home and take public transport.

Over here, there are at least 4 or 5 grades of petrol for cars, with different octane levels. Most cars will use the premium grade (98 octane level) or the one lower (95 octane level). Those who use 98 one can actually use 95 one, and save some money over time. For me, I have switched to 95 octane petrol and the car runs fine on it, without any noticeable power difference. There are some drivers who even go down to 92 octane petrol for their mid-sized cars, although they are in the minority. Using lower grade petrol over a longer period can result in quite significant savings when the economy's not good and money is tight.

Hello myfb. To begin with, I don't have a car of my own. What's more, I live on campus and there is no need for me to have a car. I am very happy to enjoy the convenience of living on campus without having to take a car to work. I just walk all the way to my office and classrooms.
Well, if I do have to go to work in a car, I will still like to take a public transport to work to save money. Good day, friend.

It is true of what you said. I totally agree with you. Nowadays many young people who graduate from college want to be teachers for its stable salary and some other reasons.

Sometimes, life as a teacher is very interesting and full of good facility around. Yeah, it sure have save your money a lot without the need to spend your extra money into using any transport to go to work. I always admire the teacher's life. I even have a few friends who also prefer to become a teacher because of the good facilities that the govenment had provided to them..

I prefer commuting because it's more economical. Some says that it's time consuming and you might reach your destination late but that is not a problem. Why not wake up early?

Yes, for some people, waking up early can solve their problem..But, the public transport must have a fix time, then you can fix your time to use it. As for my case, my area public transport don't come at the same time everyday. So, it won't solve my problem, if i were to wake-up early..

I would still prefer using my own car rather than being dependent on the public transport as it does not make any sense being dependent on services which are not good.
If the public transport services are good i would prefer using public transport to save the addional cost of commuting

Actually, it's more convenient to use public transport if your area had a good flow of public transport service. But, in my area, i need to wait from 1/2 to 1 hour to use the bus. Sometimes, i even need to wait for nearly 2 hours. So, my best option is by own car. It's good to know that you are doing your best to protect the environment. Keep up your good work..

Yes indeed, traveling by public transport is much more easier and hassle free. Traveling by ones own car increases the expenses and increases the parking problems.

I'd prefer driving my own car. Because it's very easy to travel from one place to another anytime with your own car. Unlike using a public transport vehicle, it will take some time because the driver won't run it a the speed you like especially if it is still getting more passengers. Also, if one ride is not enough to reach the place where you are going. But with my own car, traveling is fast.

Actually I prefer to use public transportation to save money. But in Indonesia, we need to drive our own car. Because there is a lot of criminality when we use public transport and the transportation fee is not that cheap if we compare with driving own car. I ever try to use public transport to go to work and the result, I spent a little bit more than I driving own car.

Sometimes, we choose the type of transportation is depend on our safety. Since you said, it's not safe to use public transport in your country, then driving own car is the best way. Wow, seems like, public transport fee is quite expensive in your country.

In the city which I live, cars are too many to find a place to park sometime, even you would like to pay for parking fees. To the point mine own car is not fix to my city, now the traffic is piling enough, not fit to add cars actually.
I am too poor to by a own car, have to using public transport to work only. Alghouth both need to wait, I prefer to by metro. Yes, it is more expersive than bus, but it can save many time of mine, and it is easy to guess how long I should wait for it.

Yes, city always have too many cars and not convenient to drive car in the city area. If your public transport can arrive at the same time, then it's convenient for you to use it to go to work. Do you mean using train to work? Yes, it's more convenient and can reach faster to its destination..

i choose to take public transport. i am from singapore and driving a car does not simply mean paying for gas and parking fees, we pay a fee everytime we bypass a gantry located at every road leading to where i work in the central business district too. these are called Electronic Road Pricing and at peak hours, some ERPs charge you $4 just by passing it. and if you get lost, you don't just get charged once, you get charged everytime you by pass one or ANOTHER ONE. time are bad and so i prefer taking public transport. furthermore, it is more environmentally friendly to do so.

I prefer using public transport because it is cheap and effective but sometimes the waiting kills me if there is no more seats left and the buses are extremely packed with passengers who are not willing to budge. This makes me frustrated. But overall, I am able to cope with it and still prefer taking buses.

Personally I think overall, both have their advantages and disadvantages as you have pointed out. It is expensive to drive a car with the price of gas, Insurance, parking fees, etc. to where it could be cheaper to use public transportation. But then if you want to get home right away it can take a lot longer to do so as well. So I think personally it is a matter of taste as what works best for each person for sure.

You're right. It's not easy to own a car. There are just too many expenses involved when owning a car. Sometimes, i do felt quite pressure when i saw my car down with engine problem and need to service. Using public transport is still the cheapest way..

I prefer to use Public since it's very accessible here in the Philippines.even if there's no buses, there would still be jeepneys. trouble is if you leave at the peak time where workers, students arr leaving, chances they would a long line in the terminal, which also allow you to wait for hours. but the advantage there is that, better be early than late.

Since last summer I have ridden my bicycle to work and to the grocery store every day, even when it rains. I use my car only when I need to purchase a large amount of grocerys or to get someplace important (to the doctor or to a friend that needs help)quickly.

110% - Public transport(metros are best for me).. rather my boss.. had suggested a car for me.. as a part of my last appraisal and it took me time to convince him,, he is in a way trying to punish me by giving me a car :) distance i can cover in 202-21 minutes by metro will take atleast 45-60 minutes in a car, forget abt being economical , but metros are so much more time saving i would prfer it even if it was working expensive then car transport due to time factor
