Well it is finally summer like weather here in Minnesota. I planted almost all of my garden veggies this weekend. I have a lot growing this year. Over 20 crops planted. I dug a larger area and two mew areas as well for this years crop. I have everything but tomatoes planted. Thjose will be in the ground this week sometime. So is your garden all planted yet? Is the weather cooperating with you this summer?

well, here in ontario, they say a rule of thumb is never to plant before the may 24th long weekend (or in your case, that would be memorial day weekend) because the ground could still freeze at night. we are still getting temperatures of 5 celcius (i guess that is about 44 f).

Our date is usually May 15th. But the weater is the key factor. Its been above 40 for a week at night and 65 plus daytime temps, so the ground is very warm and crops of all sorts can be planted now. Usually tomatoes don't go in the ground till mid May for me though.

I thought the ground temperature had to be above 60 or so? It's still going to be in the high 40's here at night for a few nights yet. Is it safe for me to put my vegetables in the ground?

Cabbage, cauliflower,radishes,onions,
leaf lettuce, carrots and a few others are okay.
A lot of various spices are good for cold ground as well. Like I said, my ground is in sun for about 10 hours a day so it warms a lot wquicker that the other areas do and the soil is toasty warm already.

I am sure you are so excited to be out in your gardens getting everything planted. You will be real busy this year with more to tend to. Do you have a big freezer and freeze things? Or just can them? Our weather is horrible, windy and no rain. We were almost at 100 yesterday but heat index was 106 and then this morning had a small cool front come through but it at least knocked some of that heat out of here.

Yes I am. Now starts the daily watering and weeding process. Weeding is the most hated chore of gradening for me. My wife does a lot of weeding on Saturdays and Sundays so a lot of times I leabe them for her. Tee hee. In the 70's all week here. Perfect temps for me. No 100's here please.

My garden was all planted last week. tomatoes, green peppers and one cabbage plant.
You must really have a large backyard for all the crops you plant. I wish I had more room so I can plant more crops.

Here in Minnesota we usually can't plant tomatoes till mid May or later as the grounds still too cold. Ill plant mine this Sunday probably. A double sized lot compared to normal city yards.

How small is it?
All told the areas I have veggies alone growing covers maybe 125 to 200 square feet if I guess right.

My garden's not planted yet, just some radishes in a pot,
and the stuff that comes up every year, like raspberries and strawbs.
Now, I have a question for you...
Are you planting catnip in the mew areas?

I've only attempted a flower garden a couple times. I've never planted a vegetable garden. It sounds so rewarding.

I have been lazy and not done anything as far as a garden at all. I am debating over whether or not to do it. I don't really have the money to be buying a bunch of plants and I am not sure if I can commit to the time it would take to take care of it.

Bob-
Wasn't the weather just gorgeous this weekend? We live in an apartment so we're not doing gardening yet, but we do love the farmers market down this way every summer. We can't wait until we get our first house so we can have a garden each year.

We're having some strange weather here, Grandpa Bob. For a week or two it was really warm, summery weather. Then this week, it turned colder again and on Thursday nights the heavens opened and the winds blew almost a gale. It ruins the plants that are in flower. Most of the blossoms have been blown from the shrubs and trees, but my lilac held on, although I fear that its flowering life has been shortened. I love lilac and had waited patiently for it to come out... then this! Oh well... back to the drawing board. It seems calmer and less cloudy this evening, so let's hope for warmer, sunnier, calmer weather from now on!
Brightest Blessings.

You're doing way better than me. I've only gotten two new rose bushes planted so far. It's been raining here for the last several days so gardening is out of the question....not to mention the fact that I don't like sinking in the mud when I'm in the yard. LOL! And I have a bunch of succulents and a spider plant to put in the ground soon. If I don't I'll have to get bigger planters for them. And I can't lift the ones that they're in NOW! As for veggies, well, that doesn't happen around my house. Too many kitties and adventurous dogs around for it to be successful. So I guess I'll just stick with my roses.

best regards.
