Do you feel that you are better educated since getting a computer and going on line? I believe that I have used my computer as a good source for information. The internet is quite an expansive way of learning and educating ourselves. I let my son play games and also look at certain web sites that provide things for him to help him learn and grow. So all in all I was wondering if going on the computer has helped you and your family better educate yourselves in the long run.

When I was at university I hated computers and didn't ever use the Internet. i read countless books instead and wrote 90% of my assignments by hand. My lecturers wanted me to use the Internet. When I began my first teaching post the head teacher wanted me to get good with computers. Then a half price computers for teachers started up and I got my own computer from that special deal. I soon found the Internet was enjoyable as well as educational. Using a computer has made my hand writing slower but the Internet has given me lots of education.

That is good that it all seemed to work out for you. Some read books and some find the research works out just as well on the computer. I can see that writing so much can be tiring and the computer with a printer seems a little more feasible. I don't have a printer however but it seems to be working out just fine. But anyway back to the topic. It is a good thing that you came to find that the internet was enjoyable and you also felt educated by it. There are a lot of people that feel the same way that you do. Take care.

I definitely feel I have learned a lot more since having a computer, much more than I ever would have without one and even much more than I care to know. I feel like anything that comes to mind all I have to do is go online to find some kind of answer. There has not been anything that I have looked up that I did not find some kind of information on. It's great for my daughter also. When she asks questions I can go online to get answers and show her relevent pictures. This technology is truly awesome.

I know the feeling. Since having a computer I also feel better then I did without one and of course more educated. It is true that if you have something come to mind that you would like to know just go right ahead to your on line server and pull it up! Easy as pie. It is also true of the awesome technology. We can use the internet not only for our own information but to help our children as well. It is a great learning source for them. I understand that in the past and including these present times the internet has been used in a negative fashion and some people including children have been hurt through it and engaging in improper activity. As long as parents try to stand firm and keep a watchful eye on the children then we can help them make the most of their time on line. Thank you for the great response. Take care.

I have never thought of it that way but it does help to educate one's self...I also think of all the ways we now have the opportunity to reach out to the world expanding our horizons....we are not limited by geography!

Thank you friend for the reply. I like your answer here. You are so right about the fact that we can have more of the opportunity to reach out to the world like we can. We can meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life and learn a lot from people along with some other things that are educational for us. We can learn different cultures if we want to and also have that ability to accept others easier. I know that the computer has been used for nefarious purposes and I would not want to be involved in that sort of thing. I would rather use the computer to broaden my horizons and better myself through the different educational avenues it can provide.

Oh, yes! The internet came along when my boys were old enough to be curious and young enough to not mind my supervision. We all learned a lot about things--nature, hobbies, science, their homework. Even now the internet is my research tool for my writing, for things I need, for price shopping, finding out more about things I hear about and want to know more of. I don't play much on the computer, it's pretty much business and knowledge.

I suppose that there are different ways of looking at this question. Some people would rather have a computer and would be lost without the advantages of it and then there are some like yourself that would be better without one. I can appreciate that. You know what your feelings are in this matter and you stick with it. I didn't think that the computer would be more harmful to someone but I guess that it depends on you personally. Thank you for your honesty.

Kelly- It's definately made certain things more accessible. I love the fact that I don't have to sit in a library to read journals anymore lol. I think that the internet can be a wonderful tool, but I also think persons need to know how to use it. I mean, today anyone can create a webpage but it doesn't necessarily mean that information provided on it is accurate. I have to say though that I still prefer reading books for the most part. Not that I don't use the internet, as I do for school all of the time, but there is still something in books that I truly enjoy. I think it's also about balance. I have to say I've learned a lot from various sources. I've learned some from the internet, some from books, and some from personal life experience. Namaste-Anora

Hi Anora. You have a good opinion on the subject I brought forth. I found it interesting to see how many people view the computer and going on line and the numerous opinions about how educational it has been. There is definitely no replacement for reading books. I used to read books a lot more years ago before the internet and its modern technology became so advanced. The computer can become addictive yet we can learn from it every day at our finger tips. It is good that you can rely on the internet for school. You also raise a good point that there are various sources of which to go by but the computer has been much more helpful to a lot of people since its integration in today's society. Take care friend.

Well, I guess in a sense yes because I use the internet as a reference tool whenever I need to look something up. It is so much more convenient to just go online and look something up on Wikipedia or encylcopedia.com or whatever than it is to go look it up in a book. It is a lot faster as well. I know I go online every day and I think I do go to Wikipedia every day to look something up. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

We use the internet for information all the time. It makes getting information so fast and simple that I know we have to be better educated. Between the two of us we must make 2 or 3 inquiries a day.

That is a good thing that you are able to use the internet for the information that you need. I do find it quite convenient myself. Almost would be lost without it. It can be a great time passer sometimes. You are right. The internet does make getting information so fast and simple. And of course you are better educated for it. Make a couple of inquiries a day and finding your answers right there on the computer screen is even better. I wish you continued fun and success being on line and also coming here to myLot as a member. Take care.

Yes I got better educated when I and my husband had a computer here at home. I loved playing games, surfing the internet and checking the parts and other stuff related to computers. I love the fact that I was able to learn a lot of things about computer because it is easier to learn things when you have the computer itself. My son is now seven months old and I am already carrying him while I am using the computer. I am showing to him the things I am doing so that I he will learn. I am playing children songs here and he loves listening to them. I guess computers are no longer luxury because there are already a lot of affordable computers anywhere. It is better to have a computer at home than other not so important things. Computer will help you a lot as long as you know how and when to use it. Computer addiction is not good either so better know the use of computer than just buying one for accessory.

That is a good thing that you have a computer in your home and that you indeed feel better educated since that. I also like to play games once in while and win tokens to enter into contests. Not all of it is educational based but it has served to teach me a few things I didn't know before when it comes to certain sites that I do visit. That is good that you have the idea to start with your child. When he grows older he might be more prone to going onto the computer and learning some things with your help. That is true about the expense of computers. Also I agree that they can become addictive. But if used in the proper fashion the computer can be beneficial for som many people. Thanks for your opinion on this.

Well, I wouldn't say maore educated, for there are many of us that are still ignorant out there. Besides, having a computer doesn't mean much if you don't have any Internet coonection. ;) But it's not my place to judge. I haven't met one ignorant myLotter on here, so that's a good thing. I think I'm going to stay a little longer. ;D But yes, I guess the Internet makes finding resources and information easier. I feel more in tune with the world. I also feel more aware of what's happening around me. Whenever you didn't catch news earlier during the day, you can go back and do your own little research about it in the comfort of your own home. Having a computer opens your eyes to things and many are some things that you wish that you had been left in the dark about. But I guess that depends on what kinds of things you are looking for. But yes, a computer is a very important device to have in today's world.

Yes I agree to the fact that computer really help us get better education. While we are studying sometimes we feel that it would have better if we can get some more information some topic. Then we need to check one or two reference book. But it is not always possible to buy one or two extra reference book for each subject you study. In that case we can easily get some detailed info of something from the internet. Internet is like a big big library and the best part is that you don't even need to leave your house to get the info you need. Apart from this there is also some facilities that computer and internet provide in field of education. For example "online class". It is nice concept that people form different places can join the same class and get benefited from that. Another thing is audio video tutorial. I think audio video tutorials really make things easy to understand because if we can visualize something then we get it quickly and can keep it in mind for longer time.

Yes it does help so much with wanting more education and learning new things. THere are many different facets involved with having internet access. My internet runs pretty efficiently however I don't have some of the amenities that the internet can provide. Nevertheless I am still happy with the quality of the computer and the internet in which I can receive multitudes of information. You are right. The internet is like a big library. Tons of facts and information that can be used in every day living. Audio video tutorial is something that I have vaguely heard of. As I have mentioned before I don't have all of the luxuries or peripherals that can come along with some computers but I still can get the great advantages it has.

I am actually a huge fan of educating yourself as opposed to traditional methods of education such as college. I tried college for a couple of years and found that it was more indoctrinating than actually educational. I tell people all the time that I can and do learn more in one day on the Internet than I do going to class for an entire week. Not only does the Internet allow me access to massive amounts of information, but it allows for discussions between people all around the world on every topic imaginable. It allows for people to make their own decisions about what they believe because they can research and learn about opposing viewpoints. Teachers are supposed to be unbiased, but it is really impossible for anyone to be completely unbiased. Your life experiences color the way you see things, so in a classroom setting where the topic is debatable, many teachers tend to teach in a way that doesn't allow room for alternative beliefs. For instance, (and I'm not going to go into specifics here) a lot of what is included in history textbooks is skewed, making certain political figures look worse than they were and some better than they were, policies that are given credit to helping the economy when according to economists, the economy helped itself. And that is only one example. With the Internet, myself and others have the opportunity to research on our own and discover what it is that we believe and not just believe what people tell us to believe. It does have some downsides, however, because a person HAS to do the research. There is a lot of misinformation out there, so to truly educate yourself, you have to go out and read through multiple sources, not only one. In my personal experience, I use the Internet to educate myself on a multitude of topics. I use it to keep myself updated on what is going on in the world, for Photoshop tutorials, the best kind of food to feed your dog, different religions, etc. With the Internet being an ever-growing source of information, the possibilities for educating yourself is endless. So yes, I feel that I am better educated with the advantage of having the Internet at my fingertips.

Yeah, do agree with you that computers are gettting so common nowadays that we hardly get someone who's without computer at home. Internet is indeed a good source of information and a good tool for communication as well. I gained more information and news and at the same time know quite a lot of friends online. So, i'll say that having a computer and internet as well really help a lot of self improvement and learning, in the sense that if we use it in a proper way,of course.

i feel that i am more educated since getting a computer. since getting a computer, i have been able to get access to the internet. as we all know, internet has unlimited information. may it be good for us or bad for us. the internet contains information that could help us get through our studies in grade school, high school or college. we can find it all in the internet. Even if we were not in school, we could learn things with the use of the internet and the computer, that college student learn in universities.
