here in my place buying second hand things such as clothing, appliances, cars, etc. is a fad. though things are handed down already, as long as it is still functional and useful, it's still okay for most people then.for clothes, i haven't had that reasonably decent luck to have nice ones. Our world we be much better off if we all spent some time in thrift shops and garage sales.how about you?

I agree, I think if I can find use for something that someone else thougtht was trash than I think that is great. Like I will give you an example I went what is called trash picking today. What happens where I live is when all the college kids move away and graudate than they throw out all their stuff away. I mean nice stuff too. I found so much stuff today you would not believe it. So I think it is good to get used things you never know what you will find. Take care and happy mylotting to you as well.

it would be good if you're the first one to haunt those stuff. there are still fine things about having second hand items. then have it well maintained so you won't be having pains repairing them again and again.

i am fond of buying second hand things of course if its in good condition, especially imported clothes which can be found around street corners. the only thing that could doubt me in buying second hand is computer, i do not advice people to buy second hand computer because you really dont know the condition of it, maybe someday you will just slash your cash from the maintenance of it.

Interesting that you should say that! I bought a second-hand computer from someone at work. However, it was a convincing buy as the bloke worked in the I.C.T. dept (Information and communications technology) and had only had the computer for about a year. Being an IT bod, he wanted to have the most bang up-to-date equipment. Managed to negotiate down quite nicely on the price. The only thing that didn't come with it was a monitor, but I already had one of those! I didn't work with the guy personally, but he had a friend in the section I worked in, who pretty well convinced me this was a genuine buy!
The general advice in buying anything really, is: Find out as much about the product and the person selling it as possible, what is the general price that this product sells for. Taking this into account, assess how much risk you maybe taking, and negotiate on price accordingly, or look elsewhere.

I love second hand things and was brought up with them. I was spoiled in some ways but in others it was all about the hand me downs. It's great to have such things because really, it would be a much better world without so many businesses. All we need is a bartering system for these hand me downs and it will knock out some other businesses that are unncessary.

Good day, flagella08. Well, I got my phone as secondhand when someone selling it to me a month ago. It doesn't function but I have the skills to repair it so I bought it at a cheaper price. It is now in good condition after I have done repairing it. Now, I can use it especially in surfing the net and when posting here. Happy mylotting...

good for you for you know the repairing stuff. i always admire people who fix things by themselves. it's a skill, better enhance that. or start a business from there. maybe you'll shine from that. good idea, eh?

Things are really not made to be repaired. There used to be appliance repair shops. Even televisions are almost throw away. Cars would be the same way if they were not so expensive. That is what used to happen, you could fix your toaster for a dollar and it cost a hundred to buy. Now it costs 30 dollars to buy and the repairman if you can find one would charge you 60 dollars just to look at it.

I am totally a second hand person. Well I guess if EBAY counts. I do alot of shopping on ebay. The style around here is jeans that cost more than $100 to purchase, adn I just cannot fathom spending that much money on one pair of pants. so I buy some on ebay for ALOT cheaper and they are usually in good condition. You just need to really check their feedback and make sure they sell legit products.

My green heart is beating for you! When I started years ago to write on grey paper (=made from used paper) only, and I was happy when ebay appeared to buy from there what others through out, it almost became my mission in life. Meanwhile all newspapers over here in Germany are made from recycled fibres, ebay is selling more new than used stuff and my recycler heart is bleeding because of lack of new opportunities. Nice to hear about a world like yours.

yes i wish ebay will pay attention too to still fine second hand items. it would be a hit when they do that. aside from the low cost, one can have more items to buy too.

I am ok with buying second hand things, if its a hand-me-down from my siblings then all the better hehehe I don't mind having 2nd hand clothes. But I am a bit cautious about buying technical items, gadgets, appliances or cars, they have the tendency to have hidden defects if you are not careful. And sometimes the savings that I get from buying it second hand gets offset by the repairs I have to pay for after a few months of use. I am more ok with second hand furnitures.

i don't also buy second hand gadgets and electrical stuffs. i would rather spend some bucks for them than having them repair in few weeks because they're second hand stuff.

Hi there flagella08!
There are some things that I buy even if they are second hand items. For as long as they are still in good condition, I think there is nothing wrong with spending money on it. If I need it badly and no other item is available, not even brand new one, then yes, I would probably buy it. I don't think I would like to buy second hand clothes though.

Maybe this phenomenon could not prevail in my country, at least I cann't accept! Second hand things are always very cheap, accordingly, many people like them. But do you think over the security of the second hand things? As we know, these old things may have used a long time, and some functions or quality may have been damaged while you can't find the bug!

i know your point especially if the item have been used so long before. one needs to inspect thoroughly in buying hand me down items. one to two years for appliances is still good and below one year for clothes i guess. it's always everybody's choice to buy or not to buy.

Love buying second hand especially clothing! Some of my nicest pieces come from op shops! Whenever we need to buy something we generally check second hand stores and the classifieds first. Looking at used items first is a bonus for everyone, the seller and the buyer not to mention the environment; after all it is a form of recycling isn't it?

hi flagella08 :)
here in my place we seldom have garage sales.. but here there are stalls or mini shops that sells second hand things. They're not particularly at the malls but of course those are things that are still usable and are in good condition. Being money-wise especially in our country is a must. I often go for second hand stuff. :)
happy mylotting :)

yes, you're right we should think wisely at this time especially that commodities are getting more and more expensive. we don't have another choice but practice thriftiness and choosing wisely based on our take home pay and not over it.

Not that much. I'm only into second hand books. I love to go to book sales and book bargains looking for the best book with the greatest value for my money. I am a bookworm and I love to collect books. I am not looking for any book in particular, just anything that catch my fancy.

I love buying second hand things. I mean not only are they so much cheaper, but most of the time they are just as good in quality as the brand new things that a person might buy. I like going to Goodwill because they have so many second hand things that have been so useful to me and my husband.

Yes! I have quite a mixture of new and second-hand clothing. Discovered a new shop in Glastonbury recently (the town that gave it's name to the music festival). The shop is called "Worn" and is a step up from most charity or thrift shops in that it has quite a 'classy' or 'trendy' range of clothes on sale. Found a pair of skateboarding jeans in there for £15 (about $22+ US). Not cheap for second-hand, but a lot cheaper than new. These fitted just nicely, with several natty, arty features on the jeans. They have a lived-in look, with a bit of fraying on the hems, but otherwise plenty of wear in them.
All the cars I have had, have been second-hand. Sometimes I have kept them on, beyond economic repair! Have been told more than once by the repair garage, that I would be better off scrapping the car I have and buying another one. This can quite often be the case in England, as labour costs are so high here. In other countries, people seem to keep their cars going for longer...
In the last year, an interesting buy was in the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) charity shop. They had a life-size stuffed soft toy of a dog, not quite sure what breed it's supposed to be, but a medium-sized hound. It looked so friendly, I just had to buy it. And so it has been in my bedroom ever since, where is I turn around from my computer screen, I can see it's lovely face looking at me across the room. Sometimes one of the house dogs, a Jack Russell likes to come in and lie on the bed... but that's another story!

Yes. I love buying clothes and random knick-knacks second-hand. I used to work at a second-hand store and I even got a discount on everything, so I could get stuff way cheap. I love it. A lot of the stuff is in really great condition and some things are things you just can't find in stores any more. I also go to a lot of yard-sales. I love it!! I think that the world would be a better place if people did this. Most things people just throw away when there's lots of people out there who would love to have the stuff.

Yah!I am very much fond of buying second hand things, specially second hand cloths. I even go to garage sale and ukay-ukay store. I enjoy the manner of spending when the quality is good. I hate buying so expensive things I save my money more than spending it.

that's a very practical idea that you did. you're right there are still nice clothes out there in thrift shops. in fact some of my friends wouldn't really noticed that what i wear is already a handed down one stuff. they seem to appreciate all i wear without knowing that fact.

Hi flagella,
We are not really that fond of buying 2nd items, but sometimes we do buy those things. I think we only buy 2nd hand items like cars and our aircon. For our car, we buy our Mitsubishi Pajero from a lady owner and she is the first owner of it, and we find it in good condition and all are original and well-maintained, so we decided to buy it. For our Aircon, we buy it from a good friend who doesn't need it anymore, and it almost a brand new one, coz he 's been using it for quite sometimes, so I think it is much cheaper to buy it rather than the brand new one.
I guess it depends on the things you want to buy. For clothes, I don't usually buy from tiangge or garage sales, I think if we will buy at garage sales, I will buy things that can be useful or somewhat nice or cute, like display items or anything that amuses me, but not clothes.

i bought a second hand car before. we had it for two years. there was a time when my husband and I argue about the maintenance of it. there's no month that he didn't ask for something to replace.in order for us to have peace, we sold the car. i promised myself to buy a really new one, one that has a price that i can afford.

I am fond of buying things specially the very expensive one, even though I am not earning that big if I like that I will buy it, But thank God I have realized that buying expensive things will not help me it will also fade, Now I am happy going to stores that sell second hand things, because I can find there beautiful yet not expensive, from clothes, bags and accesories, I don't mind other saying that I am a secondhand person, I have one of my friend who usually boast about the clothes she wears, We are all amazed even though all of us receive an average salary still she can mange, she said that it is expensive and from other country but when I happen to go on one of the mall I have seen her she was on the counter patiently waiting for her turn to pay for her bundle of clothes form the so called secondhand store or ukay ukay, wow now she can't fool me.
