In "be aware that your attire can lierally become a costume. I have known a lot of terrific-looking scoundrels and a lot of well-dressed bums." I'd like to know why the author uses "attire" and "costume", I mean, what's the difference between the two words?

attire is closer to common daily wear in clothes(for outward appearances),costume is something you put on to be something you're not, like a clown suit or things for acting a part in a play.
