Hello all. I live in a tiny, one room apartment in the middle of NYC. I would LOVE to be able to grow some veggies or flowers or something. I have one window sill that I can put planters on but that's about it. I'm looking for suggestions to grow in the very limited space I have. I'd like to do a little something more than just an "herb garden". Any suggestions???

If you're extremely limited on space, try things like lettuce, radishes and green onions, that don't take up much room. You could try spinach or even beets or other root crops if you use a fairly deep planter - about 8 to 10 inches deep. If you would rather grow flowers, why not go to a garden center and see what they have that stays small? Most flowers have tags that explain their needs and growing habits.

Thanks for the reply peavey. Yes, I am extremely limited on space. My question is, do I buy seedlings or seeds? I have yet to purchase my window box but imagine I can get a fairly deep one. The flowers are a great idea but I'd rather use the space to grow something I can use. I'm a huge lettuce and radish fan, green onions as well. Ideally, I'd like to grow a salad! lol. Have you had success growing from seeds?

Definitely buy seeds. I don't think you can get radish plants, but they're very easy to grow from seed. Lettuce and onions both grow well, too. When you're looking for these seeds, see what else they have that grows small. I don't know what you like, so can't make specific recommendations, but good luck and have fun!

How much room do you have? The size of the planter will be an important consideration when making a decision about what vegetables to grow. Pretty much any vegetable that grows in a garden can be cultivated in a pot too. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, green onions, beans, lettuce, squash, and radishes are good choices. Do you have any experience with gardening or growing plants in containers?

Thanks for the reply. I really don't have much space at all and the sunlight is fairly limited. I guess I could easily put a 3x1' box on the sill. I've tried tomatoes with no success. The peppers I tried to grow never got beyond thumb size. In answer to your question, I have absolutely no experience at all with gardening or growing plants in containers. About the only experience I have is from childhood when it was one of my chores to hoe the garden! As I recall, my parents didn't have much luck with their outdoor garden! lol. While we're on the subject, are there any suggestions that I might start with? Maybe my green thumb will sprout! lol. Thanks again for the reply. Any suggestions are appreciated.
