Why are children today so inactive?

My gosh, I was just thinking back to my childhood, when my brothers and sister and I played outside literally from sun up until it was dark, and the only reason we came in was because mom was making us. We played with the neighborhood kids who were doing the same things. We were running around the yard playing freeze tag, kick the can, red rover, and Simon Says. We were turning upside down, doing cartwheels, playing hopscoth, climbing trees, making forts.
I don't think kids do this anymore. Rarely do I see the neighborhood kids out socializing like we did. Oh, once in awhile you'll see them out and about, but my gosh, not like I remember!
What was childhood like to you? Are you observing this with the youngsters around your neighborhood?

we stayed outside all the time. like u said mother would make us come in at dark. we didn't want to stay in the house, never thought about doing that. kids don't play out like they use to. when my grandson comes we go out weather permitting. alot of time if it's not we play on the carport. i like to see kids out side having a good time & not stuck in the house w/tv, video games, whatever.

I totally agree!! I always kept my kids out as much as possible. Even when it was hot I would take them to the city pool so they could play all day but still stay cool. I haven't had the problem with overweight kids because I think it's just ridiculous for a child to stay under the tv, video game, etc. all day long.

i think they stay in way to much. i had such a big time outside when i was growing up i'd like to see my grandchildren enjoy the outside like i did . parents should see that their children enjoy simple pleasures.

Well, now a days video games and computers seem to keep kids in the house a lot and now they seem to never have time for the things we used to do when we were younger. When I wasn't doing chores we got to play. We begged to go out to play and be with other kids and now days it is parents begging kids to get out of the house and do things. But seems their hands and behinds are super glued to them computer chairs, games and television.

We are from the same era because that is what I did when I was a kid. Kids today are inactive for many reasons. Often they are coming home after school to an empty house and they might have been told to stay indoors after they got home. A big reason kids are inactive are video games. Everywhere I go I see kids on game systems. Both of my sons are addicted to video games and they are in their 20's. Anyhow what I am trying to say is that kids are playing video games instead of climbing trees. Of course the internet also keeps kids indoors. The kids I have been around have to be pushed out the door to get them outside. Then, too, it is not as safe to hang out in the neighborhood like when we were young.
