Just recently, we experienced this traumatic situation. It's only me and my two little kids are left at home every night since my husband's work is on a night shift.
Our house was forcibly entered by unknown people (two or three, because based on a witness, there was a man standing on the corner of our house which means he could be the 'lookout' of the team) while we're asleep. I usually get awakened by just a slight noise, however, on that particular day, I was really tired due to sleepless nights that I incurred while catching up a deadline in my work.
They were able to get my money in the wallet (which was placed beside the computer), PSP of my son (he's life actually), and a few jewelries.
Nevertheless, I'm still thankful that nobody was hurt. They could easily do such thing since our bedroom door was wide opened on that particular night (first time I left it like that).
This incident made become paranoid of people around us. After that nightmare, we installed grills and other safety precautions inside the house to prevent it from happening again.
Many people have said that we are lucky, that we're not hurt..because in some other cases, worst things happened.
I've learned a lot of lesson from this incident. Now, it's the safety of my family that I prioritized the most.

Wow, what a horrible thing to have happen to you and your family! This is one of the benefits of having a dog. If you had a dog, the dog would have heard the burglars before they even got inside of the house and the dog's barking would have scared them off. I'm glad you've taken additional precautions since this happened and that everyone is okay. We came home to find that our house had been robbed once and it took a while before that feeling of being violated went away...but it does.
