I work in the retail industry and I noticed that people are much ruder than in the past. Is it me or is it everywhere? Even waiting in line at the grocery store people are complaining!! what is going on?

You are quite right - people are extremely rude. I am rude also. When I am waiting in line to pay for something and the salespeople are so busy discussing how many men they have slept with or what they plan to do on the weekend I just want to scream. People love to complain so you are opening a good topic here. My complaint is that the American work ethic has gone out the window. I had two workers here yesterday installing some equipment. I was told it would be from 10 am to 3 pm. They got here at 8:45 am, left at 7 pm and had to come back today for over an hour. They were so slow. And the cell phone never stopped ringing. Finish the job, pick up your messages later. Your wife doesn't need your approval on what kind of bread to buy for dinner. When I'm paying you a ton of money to install something - finish my job first. There, that's my complaint.

I have noticed this also, I thought maybe I was just being a bit paranoid...at one time, people just seemed to be this rude around the Holidays in stores and in other places, but lately it seems as though people are just hateful. I agree with Greenhill also, though, that it is extremely aggravating to be treated as though you are an inconvenience when you are a paying customer! That seems to happen to me quite a lot- I had a really awful experience at an Old Navy Store just a little while back, and was treated like the scum of the Earth for absolutely NO reason. Ridiculous.

Were you paying them by the hour? I think that's called milking, not work ethic. I don't think American's work ethic is going down hill, if you think negative you see negative.

It is not just where you are. It is everywhere. In this day and age I swear people just don't have the patients like they used to. And honestly sometimes I don't blame people for being impatient at times. In most circumstances it is manly because they are in a rush but there are those few occasions that it just utterily sucks waiting for slow people. You gotta hate the person at the grocery store that is counting out the pennies and you stand there hands full and waiting for them to count out a fair amount of pennies. I really hate this. I know some people do have to count their pennies but wouldn't it be easier not only to themselves but to the cashier and other patrons? Go cash them in for cash. It is alot easier. Or you gotta love the ones that are the slow drivers in the far left lane. There are signs posted that clearly states slower traffic to keep to the right. Is that so hard. There are a few other situations that it does come up but for the most part is really is people that are in a rush that it happens.

I agree with you that everyone is in a hurry. I have had to change myself with regards to that. If I am going anywhere, I make sure that I can take my time. I find it is easier for me to be a patient person that impatient. But that's what works for me, my husband is the opposite!

I am sorry to say but i noticed this too. Everywhere peoples are more rude. But in my opinion, is our fought too, because we let peoples to be rude and we go away, don t interest...we lose interest to make peoples respect us. I like peoples with personality, with strong personality, but i hate when peoples are rude. And usual peoples who are weak are rude. When they can convince us that they are right, they are rude. Peoples opinion is very important, if all will acuse a rude person, he will change, but if we are indifferent when somebody is rude with others, and don t take attitude...step by step will be only rude peoples.

More people are ruder nowadays. I think it is because they are either under a lot of stress or was brought up in a poor background. Even some teenagers are rude to their elders. These acts of disrespect really puts me off and I feel schools should have more programmes to educate the younger generation.

I work behind a register in a shop from my experience I can say that body language is important to make sure people don't throw tantrums at you. Also stay polite but tell customers they can't behave like that after all it's behaviour you can't and shouldn't accept. I've had customers in my shop who didn't have a bicycle lock so without asking they parked their bike in our shop for a few minutes???!!! The owner of the shop told him to remove his bike in a clear and serious way and he did so without throwing tantrums or being rude. I hope it helps.

I agree body language is important. I will be polite and helpful to you until you become nasty, that's when I draw the line.
