Do people really sell old computer parts - hard drives modems mother boards and the like on ebay...even if they don't work?
I was reading online that some people look for the parts even if they dont work to salvage the gold metal etc from them?
How would one list an item like that that doesn't work?
The reason i ask is - its a neat idea and would be a nice way to get rid of some parts i have in storage that i haven't had time to test - or i know don't work but say the nice metal casing is still usable.

List them on eBay as not working but otherwise looks in good condition. Some computer geeks buy the stuff to rebuild or play with as I like to say. My sister-n-laws boyfriend use to get stuff that didn't work and could make a whole computer out of it. What ever you do don't ask me how because it always amazed me. He would take one part mix it with another part and bake a cake or scramble eggs. LOL

I'm not sure it's completely fixed if there are parts leftover. LOL. When mechanics do that to my vehicles there is always trouble. Luckily my husband can fix cars so it's not too bad anymore. We only take them to a mechanic if it's a computer issue. LOL Maybe I can take it to you?

I think lots of people sell th computer parts but I don't because I don't know what price I should set and I don't know what resources I can go sell. I just dispose it at the right place or give te computer parts to the people.

I give them away, rebuild them and such when i have time - otherwise they sit in my basement because i dont have time during the week (i have to be at work) when the recycling place is open which is...an hour from my home. I figured maybe ebay would be a interesting alternative to try after reading a few articles the past few days.

No problems with that. Its up to you, since it will be your effort. Who knows someone might be looking for your old stuff online for sometime now. I even see some unique and out of this world items on ebay. But in terms of damage gadgets, most of them define it as "for parts" " faulty" and "defective" . And these type of items are being purchased by technician that is incline to the gadgets mechanism and they still even manage to earn out of it.

Its pretty cool what people can make work if they have the knowhow and inclination. I should know how to make some of this work but I rarely have the time to tinker and learn to make old work again. Hopefully someday i have time to learn. For now I think im going to jump feet first into the world of ebay.

If had actually taken the time to READ the discussion content rather than the title you would have seen What.

Hello Saundly,
I'm a Ebayer, and I have nooticed that people sell any and everything on Ebay, yes even things that don't work, it is wonderful when the seller tells you that the merchandise does not work, instead of you finding out the hard way after purchasing it.
I do think it is a good way to get rid of your, old computer parts and earn some extra cash.

I could see this happening, if people want to recycle the parts, and I think it's a great idea, if the stuff can't be sold or given away locally. When my husband left AZ, he got rid of a lot of working computer parts that he really couldn't carry up here. He gave them away for free, though. Sell it, give it away, just make sure it doesn't wind up clogging our landfills.

I usually use the stuff i know is working to repair systems or build systems for resale. Its the stuff im not sure of. I just gave a small batch of the old not sure if its working and i know its not working away to a guy that contracts to the place i work for. He said it made good practice and make work projects when it was slow and u cant take bits off and put them onto other bits. I kind of want to try this but i never have time!

I think you can. I have seen items on ebay with the info that the product is not in working condition. Check this link for example.

The items are not working, but they are still for sale. So I think you can give it a shot. Your items might be bought and you could be relieved of some garbage fro your house.

Hey saundyl! Sure! People will sell anything these days! Don't
you know that everything has a price? People sell gold, silver,
copper, steel, and just about any type of metal for money! I'm
sure whatever you want to sell would be worth something! I
have no idea myself, but you surely could get something for
whatever you want to sell! I do know that excess computer parts
of any kind will definitely sell! I don't know if they can
be re-used or what, but I do know that there definitely is
a market for them so try and sell them! I know you will get
something for them for sure!

Yes people would buy old computer parts if they have a need for them. Almost anything can be sold on ebay.
Just make sure your listings on ebay is descriptive of what you are selling and not misleading. Do make sure you draw the buyers attention that the parts do not work and need testing, so they know exactly what the are getting. People do buy parts to use as spares.
Good luck with your ebay selling

This is interesting, because I just watched a DIY show, B.Original, on different artistic projects to do that used computer parts. The host of the show was tearing apart keyboards for jewelry and wall art, 3.5-inch floppies for notepads, and she even turned a motherboard into a belt buckle! I thought they were really creative ideas - had me digging for some old floppies and pulling them apart. There's probably a lot of people looking to pick up those odds and ends for arts and crafts - a very "green" type of project.
