Why can't I say thank you in my lot??

May 6, 2009 5:33pm CST
I was reading the my lot guidelines and I did not know that I'm not allowed to say thank you at the end of my posts and discussions. I figured this was probably why my earnings have been decreasing lately as most of the time I put thank you at the end of my posts. I find that very odd as I always say thank you everytime somebody does something for me. Now I dont expect to be paid to say thank you as indicated in the guideline, but I dont understand why we are not allowed to say thank you. Where I come from thank you is a form of gratitude, politness and appreciation. Could somebosy be so kind to explain to me why we are not allowed to do so?...

That rule should be rephrased in my opinion as it is very misleading it is not meant to tell us not to say 'thank you' but to inform us that only saying 'thank you' will earn us nothing. When we comment we can add something else and then say 'thank you' but not just 'thank you'. MyLot is a discussion site so if you stop and think a minute about the discussions we have offline you will see the point. When you start a discussion you ask someone their opinion and they give you it and you say something back to them depending on what they said. If it is a discussion you were having with them and not just asking them a simple question (which myLot is not about) then you would not say 'thank you' at all. Does that make sense?

Yes I agree that there are times that Thank you is not necessary here in my lot. I think they probably meant that saying thank you won't get you paid. Afterall i don't anybosy expects to be paid for saying thank you..

I find that if you say it in your comment tothe responder it also sounds like you are not welcimg any further comments from them, as though it's the end of the conversation. By leaving it out your comment is open for further discussion and in that case you can add it on the next comment after they return and you comment back - or leave it out until you feel the responder has no more to say on the topic in question.

I had no idea that it said that at all. I guess they want quality posts and not just a few word answer or extra "filler" in our replys. I wish that Mylot would come on here and explain better or rephraze the guidelines. Am I really not aloud to say thank you like I would in normal conversation?

Of course you can - but add it on to something else too just like you would in normal conversaton. I find it very rare that I say just 'thank you' offline so it's just the same here. As long as it is not allby itself but with a few more words it's ok.

I have no clue why we are not allowed to say thank-you either...I can't help you with that one...I do however agree with you that it's a form of gratitude and appreciation to the other person for helping you! I say it too...The only thing I suggest is contacting mylot and asking I have thought of that myself...I'm just a curious!

You may get a thousand different answers on this subject....all different. I've heard this said in a ton of different ways. In my personal opinion....and it is ONLY MY opinion!!! myLot is saying DON'T make a comment of just thank you to a response as you won't be paid for it. I'm convinced, if your comment is of any length & at the end you say thank you, then it is OK. I'm not a member of myLot's Admin so I could be wrong...but I'd bet a month's pay that I'm NOT!!! So, never make a comment of just thank you. Say what you need to say to make it a discussion & then, if you want to say thank you I think you will be safe!!! I find it rude not to thank people for helping me earn!!!

Yes indeed! They are not telling us we have to be rude. It is a lot of common sense but maybe it's not so common now

I agree that IS common sense and common courtesy. I too add it somewhere but not immediately or it could appear as though I no longer wish to comment further. Once the response-comment-response-comment is over then I add it with the last bit.

It seems like common sense to me!!! However, I've been told by veteran lotters that I'm breaking the guidelines for saying thank you during my lengthy comment. Since myLot is looking for healthy, happy discussions, I just continued on my path figuring I'd be able to tell if I was wrong!!! I think that once we've acknowledged the response, it is perfectly polite to say thank you for your contribution!!!

I think it's probably to encourage people to write quality posts without padding. That's the only reason I can think of. I agree it may sound strange, but think of it this way. Your posts on Mylot are mini articles. If you wrote an article for a newspaper or a website you would not say 'thank you' at the end, would you? It would be unprofessional. That's my take on it anyway, though I may be wrong. It's a good point to raise, because not only are you clarifying things in your own mind, you're helping others to write better posts.

true.. I didnt look at this from that angle but now it's beginning to make sense.

I think you can say thank you. As long as that is not all you are saying. I like to say thank you when I get a best response and then add something else new to the discussion that I had been having with the person. I think they don't just want you to do a two word post. Or, if it is your discussion, don't just thank someone for responding. Add something extra to what they were saying. Or comment on what the person said. Make it interesting in order to prompt more discussion from that person or someone else.

What they mean is that you cannot just say thank you alone. And really if you are making a post it is redundant. It is like saying "thank you for reading this, I did not expect anyone to, I am so unworthy" You could when someone replies to your post, and you love the suggestion, say something like "I want to thank you for the help you gave me in dealing with --" and then mention the problem you had. But what myLot is not you just saying thank you. It has to be included in the answer.

If you read the previous responses you will see it explained. You should not just say 'thank you' without adding something else too.

We don't get paid for comments, we get paid for responses, so I'm not sure why it matters. I guess maybe they don't want the page getting flooded with a few words? If you want to say Thank You, I guess you have to expand on it and write a few sentences a long with it .

Because they do not up your post count for each comment it is easy to believe that you do not get paid for commenting. I did believe that, until I did an experiment or two and convinced myself. I now comment on all responses if I can. Once in awhile there are some that just leave me speechless.

Hello JellyMonty, That's ridiculous! Seriously? Where do they say that- in their terms and conditions? I think the only reason they MIGHT be disallowing it is because they don't want self-promotion of information / trading of sites or similar. "Thank you" might emphasize that someone was doing you a "favor" that was against their guidelines. But yes, I do have to agree with you- it is a little harsh to be taking away someone's earnings because they say/said thank you. Might I suggest that you "duke this out" so to speak IMMEDIATELY with the MyLot staff, because it really is not fair to take away earnings and stop people from having manners. ******** for starting this discussion! Hah- now I guess I have to censor it...:) -Fresh Writing

Thank God i read this post. Or did i made a mistake here in mentioning "thank" word?!.. lol.. I'm new in mylot and i didn't bother to read the rules and regulations. I have responded by saying thanks many time. Its really weird. Never thought some forum would prohibit user from using such an innocent word. Well.. I'll keep my gratitude to myself from now on. Hope i will like it here.. Happy mylotting to all !!

I went in and read the rules, it isn't that you can't say thank you its that you can't just say thank you to each response that you get from a discussion that you started as a reply.. meaning JUST saying "Thank You" and thats it..

i really heard it for the first time but i dont know why they dont want us do write that word may be because they think that we all are helping each other for getting money or whatever. But it looks really odd anyways from now i will not add that word in my any comments or posts

Oh, I have already said "thank you" many times in the discussions that I started. I didn't thoroughly read through the guidelines. I will start to avoid this phrase since now. But I can't understand this rule, either. Why did mylot abandon us to express our gratitude?
