Have you ever petted a stray cat?

We have adopted two outdoor kittens born
to an outdoor mama cat. But I don't think
they qualified as stray cats cause the female
cat lived in our front yard. They were our
'adopted' outdoor cats. Actually they adopted us
and in turn we adopted their kittens.
The kittens are perfectly behaved and were well trained by
their mother cat.
Today a stray outdoor female cat came up to our porch
and my daughter was feeding her.
She seems friendly enough, so I assume she has been
around humans before. She didn't scratch, but I'm
always cautious. It's so easy to infringe on an outdoor
cat's boundaries.

Did you know that the Egyptians revered cats as protectors of the soul. I love them, they are so exotic and majestic. Oh and yes, I have and I think I want to pet every cat I see too. If you want to you must let them smell the back of your hand first to know that you are not a threat and you must move slowly. Any sudden movements will scare them.

Aaah I'd really love to but my mum can't stand cats she will surely kick me out of the house if I adopt a stray cat. My friend had, somehow. It was a really cute female cat with one blind eye. She said the cat was in a very weak condition when she found it, so she adopted it out of pity.

My daughter-in-law took one in. I'm sure it was domesticised before it found her though. He was quite a skinny cat, always coming around for food, and my daughter-in-law's cat had been run over and had to be put down a little while before, so she took the cat in, had him examined, his injections done, and he became part of the family. Some ten years on, he's filled out, and his fur is really healthy. He's still with the family but a little wary of the dog, so he has the front entrance, whilst the dog is kept out back, so he can get in and go upstairs. lol.
Brightest Blessings.

How on earth did I miss this discussion?
Pet a stray cat, if they let me!
I finally got my hands on Hobo after feeding him for about a year, and his getting pretty sick.
Once he got scratched on the head, he remembered that he really LIKED that and couldn't get enough!
I finally grabbed him and took him to the vet where he wanted to put Hobo down because he had FIV and was a stray. I told him, "He may be a stray, but he's MY stray!"

The outdoor cat is a real scratcher!
She doesn't like to be picked up.
For now, we have instituted the 'no petting'
policy for all non-house cats.
She has four indoor cats anyway.
More than enough.
Just two days after my daughter started trying
to play with the outdoor cat, her indoor kitten ran away.
He was gone for a full day.
Next morning, we opened the door and he was standing on
the porch.
He was scratched up really bad from getting into a fight
with an outdoor cat.
Now he's doing OK. It's been almost two weeks since
he got back inside the house and you can barely tell he
was outside.
Except that he acts so mature now.

All three of my cats started out as stray cats. The first one was a stray farm cat. The second one was a stray garage cat that my two year old was able to tame and lure into the house. That feisty little thing would hiss at anyone else, but he just followed my son right into the house! Now he's the cuddliest and friendliest cat I've ever seen. The third was a little runt we found outside. Some young teenagers were attempting to torture it. By the time we found it, it was bald in many areas and starved. Somehow I was able to nurture her back to health, and she makes number three in our house!

That's how we use to end up with our cats when we lived out on the farm. They'd come right up to our door and we'd just start leaving food out by the door and eventually they would come inside and want to stay.

I'll pet any cat I come across. If it is brave enough to allow you to pet it, it's unlikely to scratch you unless you do something to it which it doesn't like or try to pick it up. That's a bit like any cat really! You can't assume that anyone's pet won't scratch you either if you try and pick it up before it knows you well for instance.

I don't think so, atleast not in a long time. I haven't seen any stray cats around here. I remember feeding a stray cat when I was little, I named her Little Libby and she used to come to our window and scratch. My dad was allergic to cats but we still fed her. Well her name was either Little Libby or Little Lady actually.

Hi there beauty queen. I believe that any cat lover has petted a stray cat at least once, and so have i, in numerous occasions. I like cats, and i love kittens, but unfortunately due to various reasons, i can't hold a cat at home, even if i had 2 cats up to know in my house.
When i will live with my girlfriend we both agreed that we will get 1 cat and some fish as pets ;)

My cousin is a retired doctor, who is keen on caring about stray cats. She feeds them regularly, and even take care they do not breed too much, with pills she got from pharmacies. It has become a routine job for her. Nowadays, people are getting more friendly with animals, including stray cats. But with good care, they tend to be too fat.

Once during my childhood I did that.
There used to be a cat that come to our house sometime arround 11.00 in the morning. Andd my mom used give it some milk. The it will not be found in evenings and nights. Then we can find him again in the noon...
This continued for somedays and slowly the cat started to stay in our garden. I was 10 years that time. I started oetting him. I gave him a name and started playing with him. He used to lie down close to me legs and always yopu can see him leaning on me.
The slowly he will be missing for one or two day... and after days passed , he started giving attendance once in a blue moon and then disappeared completely.
After that I started hating cats and never show my love on them.

I have always opt to pet a stray cat. It's like saving a soul. BUT I first assess the outdoor cat before taking it home. If the cat instantly struggles when I carry him or hiss at me when I come near him, I don't pet it right away. But if the cat take some time before it struggles and does not hiss at me, I take him right away.
My two indoor pet cats were both used to be outdoor stray cats. I had the first one on a rainy night and she needs shelter. The other cat was the adopted cat of my first adopted cat. It's like I just adopted the stray cat because my cat adopted it.

yes,if they seem overly friendly i will.
i try to get them to come a little closer to determine if they're lost, injured or
truly stray.i've adopted a few that have showed up at my house.
but i know some are on guard around humans,so if they're hesitant i'll sit down and let them come over if they want to,that way they can get used to me.

Oh yes I have numerous times! That is, if the cat will let me. lol In fact, I've adopted four stray cats and will continue to do so if they come to my home because I can't turn them away. I just can't. I feel this way, if I were a cat in need of food or water or to be fixed, I'm going to take it in and have it done. That way I'll be contributing to controlling the animal over population. Every little bit helps! Now my most recent two that have shown up, Dreamer and Spotty, I think they're father and son but they don't get along at all, I need to get them fixed as soon as possible but getting them in a cage over night is going to be a chore and a half!

I used to pet stray animals all the time, but of course everytime I did it then they would follow me home. Especially cats, they are the worst for it whether they are stray or not. Nowadays I tend not too stroke cats I see outside if I can help it because I do not want them to follow me home!!

sure i have but they usually are to afraind. But i have petted a stray when they have gained somewhat of a trust in you. I canĀ“t say i have petted a cat here (in the city) but as I have come to understand and observed it not that bad here...but sure I have seen a "unlucky fella"...
But as a kid i lived in a more suburbain plays. I or my sister put out some food i we saw a stray cat around the house. and if the cat gained somewhat of a trust you could pet it...

Yes, I did... My cat pichan(pickoy pet name, lol) he fell from our ceiling. He's mom is a stray cat too, they just eat leftovers from a nearby restaurant. I really don't like his color (tuxedo cat) I prefer the ones who are orange... but he already came into my life, a cat from above, lol... well, at that time, he's so scared and he keeps making that noise that says skhisssh!!! I fed him with fish and warm milk and he became domesticated after three days... and now, he sleeps beside us, waking me up every morning coz he's going to pee... what do you think of that? He is so spoiled, lol. He became part of the family and the budget, my husband always sees to it that we have 1kg of steamed fish in the fridge for him. I feed him 3 times a day and because he grew up without a mom, he's not a good climber...
