I took my 13 year old son to the dentist today for his 6 month cleaning. I have had a hard time getting him to floss, so I thought perfect I'll have the dentist reinforce flossing to him, letting him know that it's just as important to brush as it is to floss. I get there and I said to the dentist when you get my son back in your office can you please let him know how important it is to floss, he look at me and said I only tell my patients to brush twice a day. You should have seen the look on my face, I was like WHAT!! I have always been told to floss as well as brush. Needless to say I will still have him floss at home regardless with what the dentist says. Is this normal or is my son going to a fruitloop dentist? I have never heard of such a thing. Has anyone else?

If his patients do not floss then he gets more business. That is the only reson I can think of.
Have you tried those flossers that have a bit of floss and are hand held? I bought them and they are great, you do not have to put both hands in your mouth to get the job done.

From my experience, most dentists push the brushing twice a day, because not everyone does it. Brushing twice a day is more important than flossing.
I have never before heard of a dentist who wouldnt encourage his patients to floss! I think it is especially strange that he wouldnt back you up when you specifically asked. I can see him not telling each and every patient that walks in the door because it can get old, especially when no one listens. But I think this case is different! I would find a new dentist who is more in line with your own beliefs.
