mean cats

I want to get a kitten but my dad tells me he will never visit me if i buy a cat cuz he is deathly afraid of them I know he told me stories about when he was young and how he was viciously attacked by a cat and not once but it happened twice and now he is afraid of them. Now I love my dad but come on can u really be afraid of a cat they are small a dog on the other hand come in really big sizes and have sharp teeth. Now I know a cat have nails and teeth but if a cat tried to attack me I think I would be able to handle it and overpower it they are not so big and maybe i might get scratched but I wouldn't be afraid thats just weird. Do you think cats really can hurt just as bad as a dog can??

I've had cats for over 30 years. I've only ever had one bad cat. I never dreamed a cat could be so mean!!! If I made him mad he'd hide somewhere & wait for hours until I walked by. Then he'd leap out & tear chunks of skin out of my leg. Then he'd run like the wind & hide. He was so dayum fast that I didn't have time to grab him. After he did this 3 or 4 times & I ended up in the emergency room, I gave him back to the lady I had adopted him from. It wasn't until then that she told me that his dad had been so mean that he'd attack her & her children. He attacked so viciously one day her hubby shot the cat to stop it. I don't think of cats as being mean enough to scare me, but I got to where I watched for my mean one until I got to take him back & I did nothing to upset him until I could return him. So I can understand your Dad's fear, but he should be old enough to know most cats aren't like that. To hold you emotionally hostage for his fears is ridiculous!!! I think I'd get a cat if I wanted one & let Dad decide if he loved me enough to visit!!!
