How do you tell someone to give back your stuff?

If someone (friend or not) borrowed something from you and you're not sure if he or she forgot about it cause it's been a couple of weeks or even months already and he/she hasn't returned it, how do you ask it back? What would be the proper words so he/she wouldn't feel embarrassed about it?

well i would probably use the terms: by the way, just wondering if you still have my _____________ cause i havn't seen it in a fair while but i seem to remembering you borrowing it last. Give or take a few words, this is what i tend to use tho.

Well if that happends, I would simply remind them about the things they borrowed from me. I guess that is the most effecient way in getting back your stuff; be frank w/o being tactless.

I join your party. I get too embarrassed to ask for them back. Like I was given three hard cover, thick books as a gift when they were published. A friend was visiting town and really wanted to read them. I lent them. She'd be back visiting family in a couple of months. But didn't hear from her then. Was a while till we got chance to catch up. I didn't want to be embarrassed or sound greedy asking back a year later. Then 2 yrs, then 5, etc. I still occasionally send e-mails back and forth but have never asked, from now feeling a bit guilty for not acting when I had the chance. Too awkward now, esp. as haven't kept in touch very well.
