If you're serious, as you say you are, then I would suggest the same thing about finding a group of folks to read it, critique it and comment on it. I can do better: www.scribophile.com
That's a writing site where they do just that. You'll have to comment on other folks' work to build up enough 'karma' (virtual credit) to publish your story, but they're VERY friendly and helpful. I just published Chapter One of my time travel novel on there and the critiques were astoundingly helpful. Spotted some errors, helped with the flow, showed whether there was interest and so on.
Oh, and it's free of course!

If you're really serious about writing a book, you'll need to find someone or a group of people who are willing to read it for you. These people should be people who enjoy reading and who are knowledgeable about spelling, grammar, and language usage. They will be able to tell you if they like your story or not, or give you helpful advice on how you could make it more interesting. They can also proof-read your materials to make sure that they are written well without spelling and grammar errors. Most books that get published are edited and revised at least a few times before hitting the book stores.

Hi there, It's good to know that you want to write a book, i would think that the first thing you should do if you want to know whether people would like the thing is to first come up with a topic. Then you could ask a few of your friends what they think about it. You could post it right here at mylot and ask all friends to respond and what is there opinion on it. Good luck!

I think the first question would be "Would you read it? Would you spend 25 bucks on the content?" After being totally objective with your questions of yourself, then yo should be able to encourage a couple of very trusting friends to read at least portions of it to see if you can get some good input.

I agree with you Macdingolinger, you give out great advice. Usually if our friends don't like it that's a good indication that it may not be all that great. But then again I don't know if friends can always be counted on to give an unbiased opinion. Therefore it might be best to get the opinion of total strangers, less risk of them taking sides in my opinion.

That's a good question. first thing comes to my mind is that you should stop for a while and thing about why are you writing this book, it sounds that you are not quite sure about your reason. Certain people write book for certain reasons and this is their own scale of books content and wether they are writing for people or to experss something. Other case which might be considerable is the language you use to write a story as because a same story can be written in so many styles and can be attractive to a various categorites of readers. Maybe you should research more online about styles and writing books itself to get more info first and then decide about on how to put your story to be interested for a common buyers. If you are hesitating because you might think that the actual story might be not very interesting then ask yourself and your friends if you would be interested in reading something like that? I don't know what is the story about but remember in terms of stories a people like the wierd stuff the more unexpectful a facts are and the more detailed is your style so you can pull the reader into the book reality the more succesful you will be. Good luck with your work.
