Spamming to Gain Prospects....Does it work?

Marketing on social networking media sites is all the rage today it seems, which is great I think cause that's what its there for "Networking". The problem I have is with those networkers and marketers that constantly post their websites and or capture pages on your site, or wall! It's annoying and I think that it takes away from their crediablity don't you? I think if you really want to market your business on these sites I think you have to do it in the way that makes you seem genuine but at the same time not too overt. You don't want to pitch, but instead you want to gently encourage by giving people value and substance. Any what do you guys think?
