Why interpret the word of God?

It is a pity that people interpret the Bible according to their own convenience. The interpretation given by one Christian denominaton may be different from another. If Bible is the word of God, then we have to take it literally and not interpret according to our convenience. Of course, there are some statements which canot be taken literally because then, it would not make any sense. In such cases, should we not be humble enough to say that we have not understood such and such a statement? Instead of that, interpreting that which cannot be taken literally is disrespecting the word of God.

The Tanach(Hebrew Bible or old testament)is a story about the Israelites grappling with the concept of monotheism. It tells of their ups and downs their successes and their backslides. It lists 613 Mitzvot or Commandments given to them by this new G'd that no one had ever heard of before. It also lists the 10 Mitzvot or Commandments that christians try to follow even today. It is full of beautiful Psalms or songs that are sung in churchs and recited in Synagogues today. There are stories that are wild and weird. There are rules of Kosher that are still used, and rules of the Old Temple that are obsolete. The Tanach can be read as a precious book of an ancient people with great honor and respect. It can be read as a gift from G'd, given through the eyes and ears of man as they witnessed His wonder for the first time. It can be read as the word given directly from G'd to man. However, one sees it it is still a very rich heritage in words. It should not be abused or twisted or destroyed in any way. Shalom~Adoniah

Hi Frederick, am I to understand that you have some doubts about the word of God that is presented in the Bible? I ask this because you said "If Bible is word of God"

I am under no obligation to feel sure that Bible is word of God. There is no such thing in the Bible which we can say has come from the Divine. A careful study of Bible has brought out the similarities between the Biblical account and Pagan mythology. These similarities are too many to be ignored.

Yes many people have misuse the Bible verses they speek to suit their own meaning, instead of letting the Bible to speek as it is they misinterprate. Bible is full of wisdom, knowledge, understanding, blessings etc. It needs clear explanation when explaining for something. It needs the help of the Holy Spirit to understand the passage one is reading. When interprating the Bible the following steps need to be followed. 1. Observation- you observe what is there in the passage you are reading. 2. Interpratatin- what is the meaning of the passage; Again the background- what was in the writers mind when writing that passage. 3. Co-rrelation- Are there some other passages or verses that are the same as what you are reading. The 4th one is Application- what was the meaning of that time, and what is the meaning of today. Thanks.

I don't think there's anything wrong with listening to other points of view on passages we don't fully understand. That helps us to better learn and understand the word of God.

The fact that the Bible is full of imagery, artistic examinations (poetry, short stories, and such), and metephors only causes it to lead to people scewing it. When an individual looks at a painting, they interpret it as they see fit. I view paintings and tend to look for ways to see violence and darkness (as that is what I enjoy in art). Others may see the same painting and seek love and solace. That is the bible. It is a book of stories with subjective interpetations. If it truly was the word of God, it should be less easy to scew it. I may also say God is very self-righteous (for better or worse, its up to you) if he insists poetry about himself (written by someone else), is his "word."

I'm always confused by this. There is poetry in the Bible. But most of it is identified as poetry. The Songs for example, are called Psalms which means songs. Short stories are actual events, many can be verified outside the Bible. As far as dreams and metaphors, in many cases, they are explained as such. The problem comes when you take a fable told by Jesus, who then explains the fable, and say that other stuff in other parts of the Bible, must be a fable too. No, it doesn't work like that. What is said to be a story or metaphor, is, and what is not, is not.

Yes! finally some one put it a way I can live with! Oh wait but the bible says nothing regarding the scientific proof of dinosaurs before man. That's because apparently there was nother before man. Okay so in summary Christains CANNOT believe in dinosaurs! Gee, I feel better, thanks for clearing that up. Good day to you.

i see this way too much. people will preach the word of god for their advange. but it always seem like they twist and bend the words. the one i see most of the time how they will tell other how they need to forgive but they cant forgive others.

The bible needs to be interpreted because its use of language is not precise. The language of the bible is vague for the most part and that's why there are so many different denominations and factions with their own interpretations. In other words: Christians and the writers of the bible don't know how to "talk straight". That's why there is so much confusion. From the perspective of effective and clear communication, the bible is a poorly written book. If "god" can't communicate clearly, what's the point of "his" messages? What's the point of trying to figure out what "he's" "trying" to say? I guess Christians and their "god" view life as a game of word-puzzles that's why they don't "talk straight". How many collective life-hours could be put to better use for humanity if the bible didn't need interpretation? Millions of hours. How easy is it to trust anybody who can't "talk straight"? It's just ridiculous.
