I wont be finishing this project

This doesn't happen very often, but I started a baby afghan that I wont be completing. I got the pattern from a friend of my mother's and since this person is deceased I can't ask them what I'm doing wrong with the pattern. The instructions say to use 4-ply yarn, variegated colors, and to use 3 strands at once with a size H hook. Well, it's thick enough to be a rug, not a baby blanket. And I'm about half way done with the yarn and only about 1/4 done with the afghan. I've tried to make it with just one strand but then it's way too small. I got very frustrated and just gave up on it. I'll be ripping out what I've done and make something I know how to do.
Do you often/ever leave a project to never finish it? I have some that I will finish, but they've sat for a while...

I don't usually use patterns. I tend to make them up myself. Patterns tend to go all wrong for me. I like to look at pictures on the net and then just make the article from that. Somehow it just works out better that way for me.
I rarely leave a project unfinished. That only happens when I misjudged the amount of yarn needed and cannot get more in the right dye lot.

Makes me appreciate no dye lot yarn. I have tons of yarn that I seriously need to take the hook to.

"No dye lot" is also my favorite. That way when you have leftovers you can keep using it for something else. Although I do have some things I make with all my lefovers and they turn out ok.
I have only made a few things without a pattern, I'm just not that talented really. I can usually follow a pattern very well, but this one really eludes me.

Yes I have unfinished projects, but eventually they do get finished. It may be tomorrow or it may be a year from now but I will one day finish them....lol.

I have one like that too. I'll work on it every now and then, but I really should get it done one day. My sister has been waiting years for it!

How about trying it with two strands instead. It would be interesting to see a picture of what it is like. You can look it up online if you have a name for the pattern. I do have tons of projects that I never finish, shame on me. It makes me feel like a failure sometimes.

I didn't try 2 strands... I did try one and it just was way too small. Then I thought a bigger hook, but I think that would mess up the way it should look. I'm really very frustrated with it and I didn't want to deal with it any more.

Perhaps you need to use a larger hook? Even so, I'd still finish it. As you say it is thick enough to be a rug, so why not a baby mat?

I don't even like it. I thought about a bigger hook and only using one strand, but it still didn't work. It's very frustrating so I'll most likely rip it out and make something else.

I have a few projects i havent finished. I have to blankets that are half way down, and one has been that way a few years, the other about one year. The one that is a few years ago that i started will probably never be finished and its not the type of blanket where you can undo it and use the yarn for something else, the other blanket, even though its only half finished i still use it. Both cant be finished because i have no idea what size hook i was using at the time. I sometimes have trouble with patterns and given up on it.

I have one blanket I started years ago for my sister. I will finish it, but it's very heavy and I can only work on it during the winter. It's with an afghan hook and can hurt my hands from holding it too. I just can't work on it that long and I hate to drag it all out (there's many colors on bobbins involved) just to work on it for a couple days. I really do need to finish it though...

I don't leave things unfinished, it may take me a while (like up to a year) but I do get them done or I just rip them apart and use the yarn for another project. Sometimes it's hard to picture what an item will look like when you are following a pattern. I believe you have to get at least half way before you can determine if what you are doing is acceptable or not.

I'll definitely be ripping this one out. It's just not working at all. I will reuse the yarn for something else though, that's for sure!

I think i have a couple things i started and had to wait to get help - a few that I'm waiting to have money to get more materials (backing or quilt batting) or gave up on temporarily til i could get the sewing machine fixed. That's fixed now and I've started sewing again.
I also have some photos to be scrapbooked - lots of projects on the go but nothing i can think of that i dont intend to finish!

I do have one that I haven't worked on in a long time, but this one lately, I'll just rip it out.
