I often use skype on my pc and mobile when I am in a wifi zone. It is free if you call from skype to skype and really easy to use. Quality depends a lot on the quality of the conversation of the connection but it is absolutely the best way to be in touch with my many foreign friends. I'm considering to start using it also for ordinary calls as prices from skype to phones are more convinient than the ones of most of the mobile providers; what prevents me to do it straight away is that you always need an internet connection on to have skype working and you actually save some money if you have the connection for free (at least, this is my case). I think that the final solution will be to use both ordinary phone and skype accrding to the situation.

Okay here's my take on the subject.
VoIP is cheaper than your local phone provider when it comes to calling long distance. But don't expect 100% reliability like your old phone. People tolerate the noise or delays from time to time because the savings are huge. VoIP is also dependent in your internet connection so don't blame your VoIP company if you got bad voice quality when the real culprit is your ISP.
I use Onesuite.com voip services which I find cheap and pretty reliable at the same time. I also like the pay as you go scheme so I'm not tied up to their service if I need to quit all of the sudden or switch company.
Pay as you go means you don't pay monthly plans with specific amount of minutes. Meaning I don't worry if I don't call much for this month becuase I'm not wasting any minutes on my plan.
I suggest before signing up for anything, erad the reviews, check the forums and ask around so you lessen the probability of signing up to a bad voip provider.
