In Or Out!

With the summer warmth comes an antsy dog. My dog used to stay outside all the time and loved it. Heck, he even slept in the snow because he didn't want to go inside the open garage But, when we moved here I left him outside tied up and he would get himself so tangled up he didn't know what to do. He looked like one of those calfs you see getting roped at a rodeo. Poor dog!
All that tangling with his rope also ended up hurting his neck, leaving a very nasty gash So, he has been inside the house for a few weeks now. But he always wants to go outside and be in the fresh air. So, today I bought a very long leash so that I can tie him up to the tree and he can enjoy the fresh cool breezes. Does he like it? Maybe, maybe not. First thing he did was get the leash tangled up around the trash can! Then he starts barking at the neighbor kids, something he didn't do before. When I go outside he acts like he wants back inside the house! Crazy dog!
So, tell me, do you keep your dog inside the house or outside? And, does he act like a little kid, can't make up his mind where he wants to play?

My dog loves to be outside. After a time when I've brought her in, she pants so hard, I have to let her out again.
These days, I just let her when I need to send the hubs to the doghouse! LOL

I have always called Huskies the in and out dogs ... But I have to say frost hates the outside because he was babied to much. Now the other dog we just got loved to go outside when we first got her, but know she realizes that she can be inside and not be in trouble she likes to lay inside.

He's enjoying the inside too much now. I put him outside and he likes it for a few minutes then he barks and barks until I let him back in. I think having another dog inside the house is the reason. He's a little bit jealous of the new dog being around me

While Val loves being outside, I'm afraid he'll have to stay inside more now than he ever did before. It's already in the 100's here during the day and I notice that now that he's older he just doesn't handle the heat as well. Kind of like me

We have 6 ft fences all around our back yard so during the day, our 2 staffys are locked outside unless it's raining. Of a night time, they are able to come in & out as they please as I leave the back door open for them so they can go to the toilet. It's coming into winter here & now when a cool breeze comes along, our boy will sit at the back door whimpering like a little child coz he's cold & wants to come back in - BIG SOOK lol

I reckon Val would love that idea & if he's anything like Boof & Josie, you'll be fighting for space on your bed & some blankets :p

don't know what kind of dog you have, but no matter the breed YOU SHOULD TAKE HIM OUT NO LESS THAN TWO TIMES A DAY TO RUN OFF HIS ENERGY! why don't you watch "dog whisperer" with cesar milan, and "animal planet," and, why don't you do research on what dogs need. how dare you tie him up outside to give him "fresh air." he needs exercise. when he runs off his spent-up energy, he will calm down. now get your own butt outside with him and sniff the fresh air. i find it abusive to not take care of an animal. dogs NEED human contact and running outdoors. go to the park.

I have a very large dog, part lab and part something else. He has (until just the past few weeks) always been an outside dog and a very happy dog at that. He is tied up only because this yard, unlike his yard for the last fifteen years, has no fence. He doesn't have much energy to run off nowadays. Like his owner, he has gotten to old to care about exercise.
I have seen Cesar's television show many times. It's enjoyable entertainment

I know and live with the dog, there are times where walking from the living room to the kitchen makes him out of breath *this is not a big house* he did wanted to go outside and be there, he is 15 years old and seemed uncomfortable being in the house now that the weather is being warmer, outside is breezy and cooler in the tree area of the house where he is napping right now as he loves to nap, in case you did not know the older a dog gets the more naps he takes.
This is not a high energy dog like the ones Cesar is trying to teach new tricks, and the law where I live is a dog without a fence has to be on a leash.
There are cases where a dog has to be in a leash at all times if he is in front of the house.
The dog has human contact when we go out to pet him, give him a treat, or bring him in at night so out of the day he is outside the whole afternoon.

A good solution to that is to have a kennel or fenced in piece of property. Then the dog can't hurt himself, and no other animals can hurt him. Think of this- if a stray dog or vicious animal goes to attack your dog while he's on the leash, he wouldn't be able to get away. But if you have a fenced in yard or kennel, he would be safe, as well as not being able to hurt himself.
When I had a dog, we had a kennel for him. He was inside for part of the day and always in bad weather, but we let him run around in the kennel and play when the temperature was nice and he wanted some room to run around.
It doesn't cost all that much to fence in the yard (well it depends) you may want to consider doing that.

The property is rather large and it doesn't belong to me so I'm not going to fence it all in. But, I agree that it would be better that way, as my old place had a fence and he was much happier there than here. If any strays come around they better look out, Valentine is as very large dog and he can defend himself just fine. The only thing he won't bite or attack is humans, he runs from them. Wouldn't be a very good watchdog chasing away burglars LOL

Well its good that he can defend himself then, my dog was kind of small so he might have gotten hurt. So it was important for him to have a kennel, because stray dogs would come around sometimes as well as wild animals, we lived near the woods so there were skunks, groundhogs, foxes and raccoons that might bite. So he was protected by his kennel as well as he couldn't get into trouble.

Hi fwiddy, I remember the family dog bruno when we were small he was all over the house and didn't like it. He was so spoiled that he didn't know who likes him and who doesn't. My dad was included on the doesn't and one day he run and jump on him and that was the end of Bruno. Some dogs are like that not knowing what to decide on. Sounds just like a human being isn't it . He will calm down after a while.

There are no noises today and Val is outside enjoying the fresh air and is very happy looking
Shelly's little puppy has been very good about jumping into my chair when I am sitting in it. He waits until I tell him it's okay to jump, which is very good for me since I normally have a cup of hot coffee in my hand when I am in that chair

Hi fwidman,
Ahhh, the poor dog, in the UK everyone has the dogs indorrs with the family as they are part of the family and some dogs sleeps on the bed although the dogs has its own bed, no one ever tie their dogs out side as its is cruel in our country and also the barking will the the neighbours mad and starts ringing for the RSPCA. The only time the dogs are outside is when they get taken out for a wold down to the local shops or in the park, no, all dogs stay indoors like one of the family.

my dog was very well potty trained. i had a little door for the dogs on my main door and whenever he had unfinished business to take care of he would just go outside and do them. i never had a problem with him except when i put him in one of those dog purses. he hates being in the purse, he always wants to walk on his own and i don't mind cause i don't have to use a leash on him, he is very obedient and i never even sent him to obedience school. i love my dog very much and he is neutered. always neuter your dogs! my dog loves all his little chew toys and chewy bones he never ever tempers with the garbage or anything else but he does tend to dig holes in my garden which i quite dislike but hey, its in his nature and he's just doing what dogs do. try buying your dog some lovely toys or long lasting chewable sweeties for dogs. i know its disgusting but my dog loves the liver flavored ones and they give him a nasty breath so i only give it to him once a month because its good for his teeth. i recommend you get one of those toys where they make squeaky sounds when they get pressed cause dogs are just amazed by them. good luck and god bless. you sound like a wonderful owner and im glad you treat your dog right. cheers.

My dog has never enjoyed those toys, never could figure out why. He didn't even like them as a puppy
He does enjoy chewy snacks like rawhide bones though. And, he seems to be very happy after digging holes in the yard
Our new puppy loves to chew everything, toys, electrical cords, headphone cords. He has even managed to chew one of my disposable lighters

Dogs are like humans with regard to feelings. they maybe not smart and as intellectual as we are but they know the feeling when they are being kept or held on from something. they're like children simply because they either want to have fun outside or stay inside. but putting that dog on the ropes is probably a "No No for the Dog. he simply wants to be free from doing what ever it wants. just prevent him from barking or biting a stranger.

He is generally very happy when he is outside, although I'm sure he misses the freedom he had with his fenced in yard where he spent most of his life. No fence here, so he must be tied. Yesterday he just had too much distraction from a bunch of giggling kids next door that were bouncing on a trampoline. He prefers quiet when he's outside. Even chirping birds can bother him
I don't worry about him biting anyone, humans that are strangers scare him and he runs away

He is not a crazy dog, u r a crazy owner and he's letting u know by barking. He hates to be tied up... Get a cheap portable pen and dog house instead of a leash. Leashes r for walks only. Always luv and care 4 your pet/dog they will always luv u..

My dog is very old and has always been loved dearly and well cared for. When my children were little and constantly running in and out of the house, I called them crazy too, and they didn't even bark at the neighbors
I got the leash because it would be better than a chain for the dog. If I had a fence I wouldn't need anything at all, he could just run free.

Our dogs will literally bust down the door to get outside on a nice day, so they are primarily outside. We have 5 fenced in acres and they stay on our property and stay out of trouble. They are free to come in as they want, though. That doesn't happen often! They are spoiled by their freedom to roam outside on our property and who can blame them! They are very well taken care of.
Now, we have a hairless Chinese Crested who for many reasons we keep in the house (ex: sunburn, no hair, so tiny)...but when we (my husband and I) went to the store and it was the first time we had our windows open since last fall, my mom was here watching our daughter, the dog tore through the screen in our windows to get outside with the other dogs and to be with my mom and daughter. She will jump up as high as she can and beg and whine to get outside. She does get a couple hours out there with me - when it isn't so sunny and when the other dogs aren't so excited and might accidentally step on her.

Our little puppy loves being outside as well, but he gets too excited outside. He enjoys taking walks with the girls and then gets all that energy out so he's calmer inside again. The big dog is too old to get too excited about much of anything. He just likes being outside where he can chase birds and lay down wherever he has dug himself a hole
