English is an important international language. I am not a native english speaker, english is my second languish .In my country if your english is good, it is good for your work and study.
Some years ago, my teacher told me that english should be studied every day.If you left it alone for a few days, you would find a little strange. In fact, a number of people study english at school for many years, but finally they lay it aside for many reasons. I feel that it is very regretable.
I think that the best way to study english is to use it everyday. We can browse foreign website, or chatting in english. For me i like mylot and always come here to post in order to improve my poor english! Can you share your view about it?

Even here in our country English is widely advocated, Schools are tasked to advocate english and teach it to kids well. It has become a universal language and in business it has become widely used so i believe it is important for us to learn it but then we must also not forget our own natural language.

yes i am aware of that seeker, when we were in high school our school advocated a policy, "speak english only" that used to be posted all over the whole school and anyone caught not speaking english was given sanctions. it was crazy and at times funny because even when we are eating at the canteen teachers would roam and try to snoop and listen if we were speaking english! lol.. but then it was effective, me and my friends started speaking english very well..and it indeed helped us a lot.

I implore all of you learning English as a second language to try to find the medium of expression that you like in order to enhance your skills, whether it be speaking, reading, or writing. Here are a few tips that may be of help.
1. Speaking: try to find a native English speaker, who doesn't know your language well, to chat with regularly. It could be a neighbor or classmate or colleague, or friend, or person in an online chat. What you want is to create an atmosphere where you are engaged in conversation using speaking and listening skills.
2. Reading: read any small thing in English print. When you look all around in your everyday environment you will be surprised at how many examples you can find. If not around you, you can start by selecting the areas of INTEREST on this site. Then read 1 of the discussions from 1 of them at least every other day.
3. Write: write down all the new words you come across and record them in a vocabulary builder notebook. Then look them up in a dictionary, recording the meaning, and a phrase of usage. Try after that to incorporate the word in your speech.

Just another note: as jazel-juan said, "we must also not forget our own natural language". Believe it or not, having a good understanding of ones own native language can help you learn English or any other language. You may find similar patterns in pronunciation or sentence structure or it could very well be the opposite. But hold on to your native language, it is most likely the language your brain processes all types of information in ....better to think with even if you add a new.

My answer must be yes. I will take the TOEFL next week and I have made a English study schedule for five months and worked on it. After the test, I may not follow a fixed study program, but I think I will still study English everyday. As you said there are vary ways to learn English. For me, I like watching English TV shows and reading English books which I am interested in. Browse English website is also a very good method. In my opinion, studing English especially listening and speaking daily is quite necessary in a non-English speaking environment.

Like you, English is not my mother's tongue and have to learn this language in school. My love for reading printed articles in English has boost my command of this language. I think you need to apply the usage of this language in your daily conversation and to read English books to improve further. Mylot is a good venue to improve your English as you are interacting with the world community who are already proficient in this language. The more you post discussions and response to posts the more you become confident.

Having studied another language at school (spanish), I know how easy it is to forget things if you don't use language everyday. It doesn't have to be much at all really. I mean just 10 minutes a day was recommended from my teacher to study spanish.
Even though english is my primary language I think there would still be at least some sort of time spent on it each day. For example, reading the newspaper or writing things that happened in the day in a journal.

yes, English is my second language too but since I went to an English medium school, I studied it as my first language. It is no doubt the most important international language. It is vital for our career, for research work, higher education and if we have ambitions abroad. Regular use of English hones our skill and websites and chat sites are a good way of practising the language regularly. However, while that improves our reading and writing skills, our spoken skills suffer a lot if we dont speak in English regularly..this is what has happened to me. While in school, I could speak English fluently, nowadays I fumble a lot searching for the right word.

Since English is my native language, I don't really study at it every day. But I know what you mean about being able to quickly forget a language.
I used to speak, read, and write in Spanish fairly well. Now I can only barely read Spanish and can talk to people a little bit, but that's it.

I study English when I was kindergarten and up to college but still I can't master the rules in grammar. It is hard if English is not your first language. Up to now my English is not good but I can pronounce English word correctly. I think if you want to be fluent in English we should use it everyday and at home. For my experience we don't use English at home as our mode of communication so I had a hard time speaking it confidently. Here in the Philippines if your grammar is wrong Filipinos are always making fun of you. I don't know why we are like that, we are very jugdgmental. For me I know that English is important but we don't need to neglect our native language.

English is very important. You use it everyday in your life. When I was a kid I really didn't think much about English. I really didn't care. Then as I got older I started realizing how important it tis to study English. One thing you must to is read books. Reading books can really help alot. From experience it is good for everything. My grammar has been really good since before i was a kid.

With English being the universal language, I believe that it is important to learn and apply in our daily life. English is also my second language and I'm quite fluent in it. My mom is an online ESL teacher and she teaches a lot of Koreans who wants to learn the English language. I'm also working as an online ESL teacher, but right now I am teaching the English language to kindergarten children.

Well yes, I am a language student as well so I know this experience a lot. But I am not studying English because I learned it in my school for almost 12 years so this language really takes a lot of effort and time. If you want to know a language, you have to use it very often. The tendency is if you go home and start talking in your native language, no matter how long you have been studying another language doesn't really help you out. I have been studying Japanese for 1 month already but because I can't practice it here I don't gain much from it. This is not a good idea especially if you're spending money to learn a language. I also want to master this language but I can't help speaking in the language I can best express myself.

I did not study daily but i love to read in the internet, surfing, chatting , or whatever that can help me improving my english lang. If you really want to be fluent with it, try to use it every second in ur daily undertakings. Usual usage of that iruction makes you perfect. I believe in the saying " Consatant practice makes you perfect ."
