Where I am from this is a popular sentiment and it is so popular it can almost be consdiered de-facto.However I doubt that anyone has ever really sat down to look at all its implications or origin.
Mind you it does seem to be practical and a useful statement to shake lazy people from their stupor and into action as there are many people who really beleive that because they have faith they should rest on their laurels and everything should fall from the sky. However, it does seem to be against what Gods principle (at least as I know him to be) and that is someone who helps the needy and points you in the direction you are going even if you are not making efforts in that direction.
In addition if he only helps those who helps themeselves ,then how do you explain people who maybe accidentally stumble upon a million dollars just bey being in a particular place and time.
Finally can someone tell me the origin as it sounds like something that would be in the bible but I have never seen it ?
Your comments and insight are greatly welcomed

Allah says in the Holy Quran, "Man get what he strives for". God has promised sustenance for us, but we have to work hard to get it. Once a scholar thought that if sustenance was promised by God he did not need to work hard. So he went a jungle and sat in a corner and started waiting for his sustenance. He passe three days there with no sign of coming of anyone. He felt pangs of hunger, and now it was almost unbearable for him. Suddenly, he saw a man holding a plate coming towards him. But the man was unable to see the scholar and was looking here and there. The scholar started coughing to draw his attention towards him. Then, the man came to him and gave him food. The scholar concluded, "Sustenance from God does come, but we have to cough."

I do believe it is in the Bible although I have no idea where. I have heard if for as far back as I can remember too. I have a little thing on my desk that says
GOD GIVES EVERY BIRD IT'S FOOD, BUT HE DOESN'T THROW IT INTO IT'S NEST
Kind of the same concept. Alot of ppl look at it like, you do the best you can and God will help you along. Although there are alot of ppl that also think they can just sit back and God will do it all and then when it doesn't happen they blame it on God saying he doesn't care.
As to ppl who inherit millions, win lotteries, or "find" millions...I call that luck and maybe it is a test to see if they will use the money to help others or just be greedy and keep it for themselves. I've seen where ppl will come into a lot of money and they turn into real jackazzes...hateful, mean and arrogant. I've also seen others that will give what they can to help those less fortunate...it really comes down to what type of person they are.

God helps those who help themselves in not in the bible along with another phrase "Cleanliness is next to Godliness". Both of which I had drummed into my head as a child.

A lot of times if I am trying to find something, like a place that is hiring for people to do work at home,a place to move to or whatever, I have been told by my mom and other people to give over to the Lord and pray about it.Ok,yes, sometimes it might happen to where something will coinsedently come across to you.
I keep trying to explain to my mom that it doesn't always happen like that.God gave us the knowledge, know how and will to learn, seek and find certain things in life. But,if God sees to it,for His own reasons, that you are incapable,ie paralized, mute, etc.then you can just relie on prayers, because that is the best that you can do and He knows it.
Don't get me wrong, there is surely nothing wrong with prayer. However it needs to be used correctly. For instance the pastor was telling us in his message this morning that Jesus did say that if you ask for anything in His name He will give it to you. But,it means anything that He has already approved for His children. The pastor said that there was a man that came to him and wanted him to pray with him in Jesus' name that he be permitted to divorce his wife and marry another mans wife.Lol.The pastor refused to ask of that in Jesus' name because he knew that Jesus did not approve of that.

The pastor went on to say that the man turned around and abruptly left. And he never returned back to the church or called. They have no record of the mans name or contact information.

Warning this may be a little b!tchy. This saying sounds like a Republican saying to keep help away from needy people i don't believe it has anything to do with the bible.and even if it is in the Bible, I don't believe nor follow it.We are here to help each pother when we can.and I believe G-d appears in the love that is expressed when a person helps another.

lol well you are just expressing your opinion,go ahead but you have made a salient point, there are many people who need help who cant help themselves and i would like to think that God would help them.On the other hand however I dont think he encourages laziness .tahnk you for responding

Well yes I have heard this before.
I guess, if you are not fixed on helping yourself, then why should God help you?
I think even for non believers this is a good thing;
If you are not fixed on helping yourself, why should you expect help from others?
This is how I see it.
Take care, have a nice day.

Well lets put it this way, if you feel you don't love yourself.
Why should someone else love you?
If you yourself don't do it, why should God/or someone else?
Someone who does not help themselves, does not want help.
If they wanted help, they would help themselves.
It is different if they cannot help themselves, but want to be helped.
I beleive that is a whole different story, they will be helped.
Take care.

The Bible talks a lot about laziness and those that want fast riches. The book of proversbs in the bible explains a great deal at what happens when somebody is lazy and dont work. Its even written in the letter to Timothy, in the Bible that lazy people shall not eat. He that does not toil will not eat. I suggest you read the book of Proverbs and the book of Ecclesistes in the bible. These two books explain in detail on how one should conduct their lives. One verse in proverbs says it clearly: Proverbs 28:19 "He who works hard, his land will have plenty of bread but he who follows worthless pursuits will have plenty of poverty."
Remember that God is not a respector of any person. He will not increase you or help you if you just sit on your butt and expect a magic wand to fly over you. You have to do your part so that God can trust you and when you prove to him that you are not lazy then he will step in and help you..
So I suggest you thorougly read the Bible.. It definetly has a lot to say about how God helps us... If you need specific scriptures, PM me and I will send them to you
Hope this helps.

ok thank you for your insight ,this has really helped the situation.I think from waht you have said and i can agree with you that you need to do something for ourselves first if we are capable of moving .If we were incapable then that would be a different situation

From a personal standpoint of view, God does help those who help themselves. This would mean if you are expecting God to finally hand you a job because you are unemployed you need to do the footwork. This means go out there diligently looking for work, Praying as you turn in each application and then looking for that open door. Also the same thing with wanting to move, or other major issues in your life as well.
I feel that God will never hand anyone something unless it is his will, and we can handle it. He would not give someone One million dollars unless he felt it was something a person could really handle. Most of the time when people come into $$ it is due to Sinful reasons more than God, so we need to remember to keep our motives and desires godly in all things as well.

I have heard of this saying many times also. I have no idea actually where it came from. I think we all have to put a foot forward in some way to make sure we help ourselves. Everything is out there. We just have to go get it somehow.

Hi ronnyb, That's a very old saying and I don't know where it originated, but I'm fairly certain that it isn't in the Bible. I think it arises from the idea that we have a brain to work things out for ourselves. If we were lost, it would be foolhardy not to use all means at our disposal to find our way home. Blessings.

Hello my friend ronnyb Ji,
It is 100% true. To have proofs, please visit :

"Three years ago, 40 women in Hosur decided to take a different
path. Today, that decision is paying off – for them, their families
and for the immediate community they serve.
“During factory visits that we regularly arrange for employee families, housewives
approached us to find out whether there were opportunities to work from home. That got us
thinking and we decided to help in some way”, says A Akbar Khan, DGM, Unit HR.
When volunteers were called for a training programme on Self Help Groups (SHGs), 40
women (wives of Hosur I and II employees) came forward and were trained in organization
management, accounts, book keeping, essentials of marketing and crisis management.
“We gave them the basic inputs and identified probable areas of business for them. It was
left to them to decide on what they would do”, R Venkatasubramaniam of Unit HR informs.
From that crucible was born four SHGs, today having an identity, a thriving group bank
account and a success story of their own. feature"
May God bless you and have a great time.

Yes, for you to get assistance, you must have presented your problems. If you don't come out with your problems, no one will know if or not you have such problem. I'm putting this because what you see as a problem may not be a problem to another person. However, God does not come directly from heaven to attend to your problem. It is done people around. Always be free with people you live with so they know feelings and you know theirs. Help them to help you.

The statement God helps those that help themselves is a very self-serving statement. This is not a biblical principle nor is it stated in the bible. We must remember that God reaches down to us each day. Not one of us is climbing the latter to receive better treatment than another. He meets us right where any of us are. We are all sinners and have varying levels of brokenness within us. We indeed are called to show the light to those that are in need and possibly have never been exposed to a loving God.

The phrase - God helps them that help themselves," is attributed to Benjamin Franklin in Poor Richard's Almanac of 1757.
I think that Gods helps us by giving us the tools necessary to help ourselves but I've always been of the opinion, however, that God won't help those who won't help themselves such as who can but refuse to do so.

I am pretty sure it isn't in the bible. I suppose it would be wise to leave things in God's hands but if we never took any action nothing would ever happen. If we left everything up to the Divine and did nothing I guess we would never leave our houses; we would just sit at home all day and the world would eventually come to a halt.
Even those fortunate people who have stumbled on a lot of money still had to make the effort of being present at the right time in the right place therefore there was still action involved.

Yes I agree with that. First a person should try his best in all his works. He should give his 100% effort and then the things which are out of his control is handled by GOD. GOD will help us achieve what we want if we try our best and utilize all the skills he has given us!
