Well this winter we had much more snow than usual..All winter here, we grumbled about wanting the nice weather. Everyone couldnt wait til spring!
Well recently the weather is starting to warm up. One day was even in the 30sc but usually its around 15c...It has been rainy and dreary for days...except yesterday..The sun came out and it was lovely!
I couldnt wait to get out in the garden and start making flower beds and getting ready to plant veggies...I went to the local Nursery and bought lots of plants..
I got home and went to plant them and got swarmed by the dreaded BLACK FLIES!!
Is this what I waited all winter for? I really dislike blackflies. They bite and swarm all around your face.
So now I want to know if you have any good remedies or repellants for these nasty little creatures? I always used to use OFF insect repellant but hated the taste and smell..Not that I ate it, but putting it near your face, you always seem to taste it!
Do you have any better suggestions?

I put a bounce dryer sheet in my kids back or front pocket and that seems to do the trick. Yes a bounce dryer sheet, it will repeal the biting bugs, and stinging bugs as well. if we are going to a park etc I also wipe them with it..

WOW ..I have never heard of this way either. I have always been told that they are attracted to the smell of perfumes and scents, so I would think that they would attack someone with a bounce dryer sheet!..hmmmm...maybe you want me to try it so all the flies will come to me and you will be safe to go outside!..Thanks for the tip..i shall try

Hi there sandymay
When I was out in the states for a while I was travelling around and we stopped at a place in Texas where there were loads of mosquitoes. They love my English blood and I bit something terrible. I had some Avon SSS lotion with me and everyone I was with asked if they could have some to keep the mosquitoes away. It certainly didn't work for me as nothing seems to but it was good for everyone else! Also we have this stuff called Marmite in the UK which is a type of spread for sandwiches and if you eat that it will keep the mosquitoes away too because it is packed full of vitamin E. Hope this helps!!

Well I am one of those inbetweeny people, I don't love it but I don't hate it either. If ever the oportunity does arise and you do get to taste it, a word of advice, don't put too much on your bread or taste a whole teaspoon, it is an aquired taste and you might not like it on the first time of tasting!

Hi humbug...I have heard of using the Avon SSS, but it doesnt work for me either...If there was a thousand people in the room, the flies would go after me!! I guess we just taste good!
I just learned what marmite was about a year ago. It seems people either love it or hate it but most seem to like it. I have never tried it.

The best thing I have ever used is 100% Deet. Just spray it on your clothes and your hat and you are good to go. They eve keep off the Skeeters that are big enough to carry away a small child.

Sure, I eat black flies all the time.. Maybe they would be better if I coat them in chocolate or peanut butter first!
I cant be patient with them when I am trying to plant gardens and they are trying to eat me for lunch....

I have always used OFF! insect repellent and it worked well for us. I think any spray you get leaves the sticky feeling on your skin and that nasty taste in your mouth. There is a new brand of OFF! that leaves your skin feeling dry and not sticky and there are also OFF! wipes that you can use to wipe around your face so you don't get it into your eyes and mouth.
Another brand we have used a few times is Repel...they are about the same and a bit cheaper in price. But it leaves that sticky feeling on you hands and body and that is why we decided to go with OFF!

THanks for the info...I just hate it when bugs swarm around my head..They dont even have to land on me and Im swatting the air like mad..
My friend from Africa had sent some stuff at christmas..If it can keep away jungle bugs, Im hoping it will work here on our black flies and mosquitos. I have never heard of it but it doesnt stink either.
