Why exactly are PTC's so appealing to people?

Are PTC's popular because of the convenience? Because uhhh. without a downline, and even with one they sure don't seem worth it to me. Especially with much better places like offers sites/survey sites/ and various affiliate programs that pay you so much better for a given downline member. Just my thoughts, what about you? Do you think it's getting a little bit silly with the people's obssession of PTC sites? Oh, also. I'm curious. Why do some people seem to call PTC sites any kind of earning site. My thought is.. they don't really understand what "PTC" stands for. Feel free to share your opinions!
