When you are out shopping do you buy shop brand food or the proper brand such as store brand cola or Coca-cola or Pepsi? Have your food buying habits changed with the recession?
Personally, I tend to buy store brand food when it comes to bread, eggs, meat etc. The only things that I won't buy store brand are drinks, I think that sometimes they just don't taste the same! I'm a student so I don't have lots of money to be spending on more expensive labels, and I enjoy eating the store brand labels anyway. I'd like to hear your thoughts!

im a mother of 4 so i use store brands on most things, there isn't any difference in name or store brands, most of the time they are done by the same company just differnt labels. the price you are paying for name brands the food isn't any bettr ur only paying for the name. besides with the way things are looking more and more people better start doing the same thing. most people are like me i believe, i believe the price on food are just to high anyway so why pay more.

It depends what I'm buying. For soda I will buy name brand, because the store brand tastes different. But I only drink a couple sodas a week now.
For cereals, store brand is good enough for me. Sometimes better really because a lot of times the cereal isn't quite as sweet (which to me is better). For pasta, rice, sauces, etc. I will also go for the store brand. Canned nuts, store brand tastes the same (sometimes even a bit less oily). Flour, sugar, all those things are the same in store brand so I get the store brand.
My food habits haven't changed too much with the recession, because I am already a frugal eater. I don't like to spend a lot of money on food. I just eat what I need to and that's it. I don't eat eggs, dairy, or meat, so that saves me a lot of money too. I'm also a student.

I agree a lot of the colas that are store brand is horrible, the ones at the
dollar general store are bad, they taste horrible. Leave a bad taste in your mouth, so if I'm buying drinks I tend to stick with the name brands. But as far as can goods goes, most are just as good store brands as the higher priced name brands, I mean you open a can of corn, you usually add butter and salt and pepper to it, so what difference does it make. We have found a store up here named
Aldi's, they are no name brands in there, but the prices are half what the regular store is getting. I have only found a few items that I will not buy again. And ou can takeback any item you dont' like, with the prices going up every day, I shop where the bargains are, gives me more money for other things I need. I buy all my cleaning supplies and washing powder and dish soap at the dollar store so much more cheaper and who cares what the name is on the toliet paper.

I buy alot of store brands. I will never buy cola~ yuck! I have to have pepsi products. Things such as cream cheese, butter, milk, bread are all the same. Toilet paper must be angel soft. Even if I pick up some chips for the kids, they store brand is just as good as the name brands.

There are some brands that I am loyal towards. For example, I would always buy 'proper' Coca-Cola and other branded drinks because, as you say, you can really tell the difference between store brands and the genuine article. I also tend to avoid store branded bread because I've found that it's a false economy: it doesn't taste as good and it doesn't last as long. But otherwise, I'm happy to try store branded products.
You've already said that you can't always tell the difference - or find that store branded products are better - and I agree with you there. One of the reasons, of course, is that many of the store branded products are made in the same factories by the same people using the same ingredients as their more famous competitors - so in effect all you're paying for if you buy a premium brand is the name and the packaging.
