Well i love to eat bread after it is toasted brown and a friend told me today if we toast the bread we loose carbohydrates in bread as they burn and thus calories in it. So my fellow mylotters what is your take on this?

It would be great if this were true!! Wow! Just toast bread and you can eat more! I have never heard that before. I am not saying that it is untrue, but I guess it gives me something to research this afternoon!

hi macdinggolonger, Thanks for responding to my discussion, i dont know if it is true or not but my friend only thought loud that if we are browning our toast then some carbohydrates or fat must be getting lost in bread and thus loss in calories but since you researched on it...did you find anything on net?

Okay... I did one tiny little bit of research. I use calorieking.com for my nutritional calculations. According to their tables, a slice of white bread contains 24 calories. A slice of toasted white bread is only 23 calories... and you know every calorie counts when you are counting... so toast that bread!!!

Agrim- I haven't heard this one, and I even went looking around tonight to see if anything popped up, yet I found nothing. I'll be interested to see what other mylotters have to share. I would think that the best diet is one that consists of whole grains. Processed breads are not good for the system, so getting rid of white bread, etc is best. I have heard that if you eat a slice of bread before your evening meal each night dipping it in two tablespoons of olive oil, that can help you eat less and be fuller. So, my suggestion is not to burn your bread, but change it. Try a twelve grain bread and make sure it is 100% whole grain. Don't over consume carbohyrates, but make sure you are eating a balanced meal. Namaste-Anora

Hi Anora, Thanks for responding to my discussion, what i meant was i usually brown my toast is i toast them good till the bread is little bit of brown on both sides and not burn them ( not black). i want to enjoy my food when i m eating it. It was my friend who was thinking loud that hey may be if we are heating the bread in a toaster then it might be loosing some carbohydrates and fats and thus should have less calories.

Agrim- That's a novel idea though. As Paula mentioned, it'd be great if we could simply zap the calories out of things. Though, that brings up a lot of other issues too. I actually did go looking though to see if there was anything written on this lol. I feel a bit sheepish now. Have a wonderful week. Namaste-Anora

if I am making a sandwich, I would rather makeit with toasted bread, like tuna fish, I would hope that this is so because it wouldnt' be so bad on our health, if it really does cut the calories.

hi bdugas, Thanks for responding to my discussion and no it doesnt have any basis , it was just my friend thinking loud that since we toast bread in a toaster and heat required to toast might burn off some fats and carbs so there are chances that toast have some less calories.

Hi agrim94 To be honest I can't say I believe this. I guess it makes sense but sounds like it shouldn't really add up! I have heard that eating very well toasted bread or even burnt bread can cause cancer. It may not have any calories in it at all by then but is going to do your health more damage than a few calories LOL

hi my favourite lady out here on mylot, Thanks for responding to my discussion. Well what we eat is we toast the bread till it is brown and we dont blacken it ( burn) and i find brown toast very tasty . What my friend said didnt have any medical basis in it but he was just thinking loud if the browning of bread would make it loose some fat of carbohydrates.

I am certain that toast and untoasted bread have exactly the same number of calories because what you put in the toaster is exactly the same things that pops up again! Bread comes out lighter after it has been toasted because water is lost during the toasting process but I don't believe there is a great deal of weight difference. According to my trusty calorie counter a slice of bread has 80 calories and so does toast until you put spread on it!

I can see how he would come up with that conclusion! Wouldn't it be great if we could reduce calories by toasting things?(LOL) Melted chocolate...Yum!

hi paula, Thanks for responding to my discussion, my friend only thought loud and didnt have any medical or scientific proof behind him. All he said was if we are toasting it then some carbohydrates or fats must be being lost. And if they are then at least few calories would be lost too.

I love to eat bread - fresh out of the oven, from the store, or toasted! It really doesnt matter. What your friend may be true, but I wouldnt take that to mean you can eat more. If any of the calories are lost, it is probably only 1 or maybe even less than 1! The piece of toast is the same size as the piece of bread was, so it isnt like half of it disappeared! I would say enjoy your toast as part of a healthy diet and dont worry about whether or not toasting bread reduces the number of calories!

Unfortunately, that's not true. No loss of calories that way. It would be nice for it to be that easy though.

hi Janice, Thanks for responding to my discussion, i dont think it is true that bread loose any or much calories when you toast it. It was just my friend thinking aloud. I have yet to see any research on it.

From what I know, bread whether toasted or not is considered carbohydrates which is converted to fat if you are inactive. That is the reason why diet-conscious people refrain from eating bread, rice or other carbohydrate food when they wanted to lose weight.

I am not 100% on just "toasted" side of it all but say you did burn your toast it would change the chemical make up and therefore there would be less calories, burning the toast would create carbon on the outside of the bread changing it completely
