Halloween of 1978 or 2007.... Which one is better?

I recently watched Halloween (2007 version) and loved it. Then I read about the Halloween made way back in 1978. Though the story sounded a bit different from what I had seen, I suddenly felt which of them is better. Usually it is my experience that remakes are not as good as the originals. But then here I have not seen the 1978 original.
So, which of the two is better? And why?

I like the new one because it tells and shows you why he was who he is. The old one I like too, but the 2007 gives more details of his childhood.

Halloween 1978 . . remakes are never as good as the originals, and I find that the older films look and feel more scary as well.
You have to watch this at some point, you won't be dissapointed!

For me the original wins hands down and in my opinion is the best Halloween film out of the whole series. I really didn't like the 2007 and although not technically a remake as it was given the tag of being a re-imagining, it drifted too far away from the original story for my liking.
The other reason why I prefer the original is that it builds up tension and suspense, scaring you with the unexpected, where as the 2007 version is too in your face for my liking, scaring you with visuals rather than any real atmosphere.
But then I am not a huge fan of modern horror as I feel they rely on too much visual gore and violence where as the older horrors would scare you when you least expected it without the need for blood thirsty deaths.
