I have millions. I dislike dandelions on my lawn and near my flower gardens. I am constantly picking the flower heads off before they go to seed but conclude that is not of any real use, is it?
I have spent a whole day digging them out with a narrow shovel so to pierce the ground, deep in order to get the dandelion root.
I have heard about using ammonia and boiling hot water but does that really work by pouring directly onto the weed?
I am not into using chemicals. I am seeking a means that is natural.
Digging them out seemed the only way. To my discouragement, there are millions of Dandelion again!
How do you control Dandelions? What method(s) do you use
All tips, views and advice is very much appreciated.

Without the use of chemical herbicides, its almost impossible to control them..There are lawn care companies use use the most natural methods.
Having good healthy strong grass is the best way to keep out the weeds. Once you can initially get rid of them and have a healthy lawn, you need to keep it up to keep the weeds out
with regular feedings, fertilizing etc.
It also happens that no matter how hard you try, if your neighbour has them, then you will too when the seeds blow your way. So a thick healthy grass is the best way to keep them out. Thick grass leaves no room for weeds roots to make a home.

Good point sandymay, you are right and I know this being a gardener and such.
Although once you get them and they start to take over, they can quickly get out of control which my problem is.
I am not very happy about it as we didn't always have them.
I know the lawn needs a good once over. We need to hire someone to do it because i don't have the umf. My back is done. Although it is just like me to go ahead and do it as a summers task.
Your response is that of someone who knows about lawn care. Are you in the business or do you just maintain a beautiful plush lawn?
Thank you kindly for your expertise. I appreciate your response.

You are so right! Great comment too.
I have suggested the same thing with our lawns.
Extend the driveway to be a round about, make some raised beds, lay some landscape material and dump a ton or two of gravel. No more grass and no more dandelions.
Erect a green house or two in the back.
I could tell you have had professional experience as I have horticulture and landscaping too. Lawns were not my department but I heard a lot about them and helped spread the fertilizer a few times after the aeration.
Like the response after you, the dandelions do benefit the honey bees. I
am torn as to what to do but I have already thought of your plan.
Thank you kindly for your comment.

I did actually work for a lawn care company for 3 years, about 20 years ago..Things have probably changed. But we have just bought a new house with a terrible lawn..It is one of my first projects..Oh heck, I might make walkways and gardens and gravel the rest in with coloured stones for paths..no dandelions allowed!!

If you don't want to use harsh chemicals, then your best bet may be to change your attitude toward the dandelions. They're almost impossible to get rid of, so you may as well learn to like them. If you think about it, what's wrong with dandelions? They're not actually harmful to your yard or garden, and they have a really pretty yellow color. I love seeing the first dandelions each year because it means that spring is here. And dandelions can actually be useful, too, because they're edible. You can use the very young leaves in salads, and you can also make tea from dandelions that has health benefits. And if you're really adventurous, you can pluck young flower heads and batter and fry them as a snack! I used to love fried dandelions when I was a little kid.

Nice! I never knew that you could eat the flower heads, that is awesome. Thanks.
I thought that they were not good for the lawn.
When I see them I get nervous. Lol.
I don't want the seeds to blow into my flower garden.
Perhaps I should just learn to like them.
They are a brilliant color that I love.
I am aware that I can prepare salad with the young leaves.
Thanks you for your response. Gives me something to consider.

I think the best way to do this non-chemically is to get some weed and seed from someplace like Home Depot. This is grass seed that grows very thick and strong; so strong that it chokes the dandelions and any other weeds out of existence. This worked wonders for my grandmother, who battles dandelions every year. Its the neighbors fault. He doesn't do anything about his dandelions and in spring it looks like he is growing them on purpose. If we could only get him to use the weed and seed *sigh*

The product that we use is made by Ortho and it works like a charm! We use it in our front lawn every spring and even though it takes a few days for it to work, or even a week or more, it does do the job and keeps the weeds gone all through the summer! It's called Weed Be Gone. Try it, I promise you that you won't be disappointed!

Hey, thank you for your response. I have seen several solutions that can be applied and that I can get at the garden center. I shall research this one as we are not allowed to use chemicals anymore.
I am thinking I may just turn the whole area in to a round about drive way, with pebbles and raised beds. In the meantime, as a possible alternative, I shall look this Weed Be Gone by Ortho up and see what it says. We have a very large front and back lawn that would need doing. Cheers.

We tried to get rid of these evil beings with no luck. And anyone who doesn't think dandelions are evil beings hasn't tried to do them in. I swear these things hide and then in two or three hours come out again. Finally we gave in and brought a lawn service who sprayed for them once a month. The only reason we did this was to sell our home which had beautiful lawns as a large selling point. This worked.

Nice, thanks for the response.
The lawns we have are very large also, front and back. When I wake in the morning the grass is green. A couple hours later, once the sun comes out, the yellow flowers start coming out.
It is really important that when you dig them out, to get down deep as the roots can go on for what seems to be forever. Ug What a task.
How many months did it take for the lawn company need to do? What did they spray with? Have you seen the lawn since? I wonder if they came back?
Thanks again.

Right after the lawn was sprayed they went away and as long as the spraying continued they didn't come back. I'm sure that sooner or later they would have. We moved a long way away and I have never been back. I don't know what they sprayed it with but it was 20 years ago.

I hate dandelions, they are pretty much the bane of my gardening existence. We live on a corner lot and across one way is an elementary school, the other way is a run down duplex and they both seem to be dandelion farms. Our poor lawn is stuck right in the middle of all those swirling seeds! I know you don't want chemicals but what I use and love is a twice a year Weed & Feed treatment that you attach to the hose and just spray on. If fertilizes the lawn and kills the weeds. I find that after I use that in the spring the dandelions are easily pulled out of the lawn and the whole plant, roots and all, comes right out. Other that that the only thing I can really suggest it pulling the flowers off before they go to seed and keeping the lawn nice and short so you just see uniform green. Or trying to dig them out but chances are you wont get the whole root.

Hi and Thanks. Digging is useless. I like the sound of uniform green, lol. I get the point and well the weed n feed is an interesting alternative. Surprised that you get roots & all. We have a touch of moss growing also. I imagine the whole lawn needs doing. With aeration and reseeding as well no doubt.
Big Job.
I do pick the flowers, all the time.
