I am allergic to cigarrette smoke and I have a room mate that smokes. When I am home she goes into the back porch but keeps the door closed so when she comes in some smoke comes in too. She has allergies to perfumes and I dont wear anything like that because of her allergies but she doesnt seem to understand that I cant even handle the smell of smoke on her clothes. Someimes I want to go put perfume on just to make her understand what her smoke does to me but that would be puting her helath in danger. Unfortunately she doesnt seem to care about my health. Other than that she is a wonderful person and a great room mate. Any suggestions on how to make her understand what I go thru and to get her to smoke right outside? She is 59 and has smoked for many years and I am not asking her to quit. Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

I am really surprised your roommate hasn't seen what a problem it is for you. If you are like me, I have to have a tissue box or my inhaler every time someone smokes anywhere near me (I have asthma AND allergies--yay). Your roommate has made the decision to hurt her own lungs, but it isn't fair that she's hurting yours.
I would suggest talking with her about it, and seeing if you two can come to some sort of compromise. Definitely mention the possibility of you moving out because of the smoking problem. I think then she will realize how seriously this is affecting you.
