I went to firld day yesturday for my youngest child. It brought back memories of my own last few days of the school year in which all the classes chose chldren to compete in different activities. My daughter was in the egg race and the ball kick..lol. She won a blue ribbon in one and a yellow in the other. I used to be in the 100 yard dashes and the softball throw when I was little. Do you remember field day? What events were you in?

I never entered sports when I was young. I was not that strong child. I used to be ill most of the time, hence I couldn't participate in sports otherwise I would be ill for next one week or so, in result I could miss my classes! So, no special memories for me in my school time.

If someone is not good in playing, it doesn't mean that s/he can't enjoy their child life. Yes, I wasn't good enough for playing outside games but I was good in any indoor games!

Oh..I realize that sanuanu. I enjoyed being inside as much as I enjoyed being out. I was just referring to that event.

I'm sorry to hear that sanuanu. I've always thought of our childhood as being the best times of our lives but I guess it's not always that way. Thanks for responding.

We used to have Field Day when I was in elementary school but then, it was canceled when I was in 5th grade or so and as far as I know, it neve returned. I loved Field Day. I always looked forward to it each year. We pretty much competed in every competion and we could win ribbons and stuff. I know that sometimes they gave out small prizes too. I think they did something bad by taking it away here. It was really fun and definitely gave us something fun to do!

I think it does give kids something to look forward to because now their alot stricter where talking and socializing are concerned. I know at the school my children go to they aren't even aloud to talk at lunch time and if they are it musn't be above a whisper. I can understand keeping it to a minimum but sometimes they go a bit overboard. I loved field day as a child too. Thanks for sharing.

We had field day too, although I can't recall exactly what events. I remember not liking it though, cause I always came in last; I've never been the most athletic person

Heyya syankee! Those were great days. I was picked last a couple of times myself but I think it was more about being outside and having social time with your friends more than anything that made it fun. Thanks for responding.

Oh wow! I haven't heard of field days in a very long time. I think the last time I heard of it was when my younger brother(the 20yr old one... I technically have two and the other one's younger) was in elementary school. I haven't heard of it since, didn't know any schools still did it. I remember earning all sorts of different color ribbons as did I think everyone, but I can't really remember what all activities I participated in from year to year. I do remember being in sack races, hoola hoop contests and jump rope contests, though. Fun stuff! I miss field days!

Mornin, Jen....When I went to school, we actually had Sports Day...but our BIG year end event was a Gymkana...on Horseback! It was like a "mini" rodeo, as 90% of us rode to school, and we were quite a rodeoing community! I think there was only about 30 families in the area, but all families had 3-6 children, and our school encompassed from Grade one to eight! Thanks for the memories, it was a great day of fun and hilarity....a special ending to the school year! Cheers!

I don't remember field day when I was a kid, but my son's school just had theirs last week. It was a horrible day to have it too. The sun was not shining and the ground was wet.

Awww..that's no good. Wonder why they didn't just reschedule it? I usually don't go to them but that morning my daughter kinda give me the guilt trip about going..lol...was sure to remind me that this was her last one and all and how I hadn't been to hers in about three years. I got a lot of good pictures of her and her best friend. Thanks for responding. Maybe it will be better next year.

Hi Jen! We had what we called Sports Carnival and my daughter still has it at her school. I never enjoyed playing sports at school because, being one that is not particularly gifted in the sports area I would be yelled at and abused for making mistakes by the other more talented kids so my confidence diminished and I got even worse! My little girl had her first Sports Carnival last year and I was dreading it because I recalled my bad experiences but to my delight she really enjoyed it and came second in the individual running race and her team won overall. She had a great day and I vowed not to let my negative memories ruin it for her, besides I think she is a lot better at sport than I ever was!

That's a shame you were abused by your classmates at Sports Carnival. Kids can be very cruel. Sometimes those things effect us so much that we have a hard time letting them go. I have a couple of bad memories that make me think a certain way about different things too. I'm glad she enjoyed it and you did too. Thanks for responding.

That's to bad. I haven't went to one in a few years either. I only went to this one because it was my little one's last one. She'll be in middle school next year and won't have them anymore. I can hardly ever get off work to do anything with the school but everyone showed up so I got to go. Thanks for responding.

Jen- I used to do the high jump on field day, shot put, and relays. I always enjoyed it, and it was a great way to get involved with friends. Congratulations on her blue and yellow ribbon. I bet she was very happy, and what a wonderful item to place in her scrap book to show her children later in life. Have a wonderful week. Namaste-Anora

I always loved field day! It was so nice to not have to sit in the classroom all day! Our field day was set up a little bit different. We had over 600 kids in our school, so if everyone got to choose only some events, it would get a little bit chaotic! We did events as a class. My favorites were always the egg race and the water race. For the water race, the first class to fill up a bucket won. The trick was you could only take the water to the bucket one cup at a time. The cups had a hole in the bottom so the water would leak out! Everyone got soaked, but it was tons of fun. And then there was the table to buy sweets. Rice krispie treats, brownies, cookies! YUM!
