I don't know if anyone had this happen to them but I thought I should ask. After I had my son I received a bill from my gyno for having him circumsized at $600.00. He and I are both on medicaid. I don't understand is this not covered under Medicaid?

Since it's not a medical issue you'll have to pay for it. If it had to be done for a medical issue it would have been covered.

Circumcison is not covered by any HMO since its not a medical condition although its a minor surgery. i guess they treat circumcision the same way they treat ear piercing. :)

Your best bet is to check with medicaid and ask them why this wasn't paid for.I was told after I had my son that some doctor's will accept Medicaid for circumcisions. Circumcisions is considered more of a non-necessary surgery and is looked at like having cosmetic plastic surgery .Good Luck!

Sounds like a lot of money for a tiny piece of skin. I didn't have my son circumcised so I didn't have to pay a penny. The pediatrician on duty drove me nuts trying to get me to change my mind. It's in your best interest to find a way to pay it as the bill will go on your credit report.

I think we may of had to pay for it to some degree to whatever our insurnace didn't cover. I don't think they see circumcision as medically necessary therefore they may not cover it. I'd call and double check with Medicaid if it's covered. OTHERWISE... I'd say it's just that they are slow to process insurance claims as we didn't get our final bill after everything til my kids were a few months old.

The sad thing is one doesn't always know what completly covered until it's already been done. If you end up paying for it try to get things worked out on a payment plan most hospitals are pretty good about it, though they don't always want to let you pay what you can afford to pay. *sigh*

It is considered a "vanity" procedure. There is not one single medical need for circumcisions. It'd be like me walking into a doctor's office and I've got Medicaid and demanding a boob job. It's a vanity or a cosmetic procedure. I think all circumcisions should not be covered if you're on the public's dime. It's a vanity procedure. Cosmetic surgeries are not covered unless you're disfigured or you have a genetic disease.

damn thats a lot of money to have a little piece of skin cut off i think you are getting ripped off all 3 of my boys had it done my insurance covered it but they send me a list that is kinda like a bill but it says on it this is not a bill and it only costs $50 to have it done when my 3 boys where born and my youngest son is only 3 years old , i would check and find out why it cost you so much and why it's not covered.

I'm in the UK, so can't say too much about it. However, I have studied the US medical system so know a bit. Was the circumcision for religious purposes, or for medical reasons? From what I gather, medicaid is there for essential medical aid only - i.e.it would cover him if not being circumcised was stopping him from weeing properly, but not if it was a request from the parent. It won't cover you for a non-essential operation (any more than you'd be covered for requesting a permanent boob job, rather than the temporary one childbirth gives you) In other words: CC for a medical purpose - yes, you'll be covered. Religious - no (unless it was medical as well) If it was for medical reasons, it may be they THOUGHT it was for religious reasons - something you'll have to take up with them and the doctors.
