I am a 40 year old mother of a sixteen month old daughter, my first daughter. I also have one son, age sixteen years. Are any of you also the older mother of a very young daughter? If so, do you also occasionally get comments at place like the grocery store, etc., like, "Oh, is that your granddaughter?"
Is it just me, or is that sort of rude? I know I am not a teenaged mother, LOL, but it seems at times that people are absolutely incredulous that I might actually have such a young daughter.
Please share with me your experiences. Thanks!

That is rude! I'm not an older mother, I was a teenage mother. I had my little girl at 17, and my son at 21.
When my daughter was a few weeks old, I went to the mall with my step-mother, step-sister, and my daughter. This cashier at a store starting talking to me, and then asked how long I was babysitting! I told her the baby was mine and she got a nasty attitude and just said there was no way the baby was mine. I offered to show her the episiotomy (sp?) stitches and that shut her up!
In your case, I'd be a b**** and say the baby was my great grandchild!

LOL- I have to say, you made me smile this morning, and I sure do appreciate that. I know I am older than a lot of moms of small children, but like you, I think it is really rude for a cashier to act totally disbelieving that this toddler is my daughter, rather than my granddaughter. It kind of reminds me of those people that ask how far along you are when you are overweight, but not pregnant!

I had my first and only daugher at age 42. I tried previously for several years and my little angel finally arrived in 2006. I have been told I look young for my age. I did have one experience in a Walmart, the cashier asked if she was mine, I was like yes, had her late in life but she keeps me young at heart.
