about catagory pictures ?

i have seen that every catagory has their own pictures or i say every picture has their own catagory on mylot. which is true ? my answer : i don't know. i had seen many catogries has multiple picture for people to use. can anyone know how the pictures are selected for each catagory , what is the logic or thought about it. thinks as a admin , i am very much confused. did i cannot make another catagory by uploading my own picture different from any catagories present on mylot.
