She is a comedienne and when she is on the stage, all was supposed to be joke, right? Unfortunately, "tao ako, hindi ako Igorot" was not a good joke after all. I am an Igorot too and I can truly say that really hurts. There are lots of negative misconceptions about Igorots already and this is one of the worst.
However, I do think that with Candy's apology (which we can read here:
http://blogs.pep.ph/candidly/), it is best for everyone hurt to forgive. The pain will not be erased or healed by hurting more people. First, the line was meant as a joke. Others have issued grievous statements purely out of ignorance or to intentionally hurt. Second, Candy realized her mistake and she sincerely asked for forgiveness not just in writing but in national television shows. Third, it will be better for the Igorot's to show the world that we know how to defend our ethnicity but we are more human because we can forgive.
As Candy have said, this is a wake up call for her. May this hullabaloo reminds more comedians, or the whole entertainment industry in general, to be more careful how they treat ethnic/culture issues in their shows. I also hope that this will also generate more positive stories about the Igorot/Cordillera tribes.

i am a professional working overseas when i read this issue on the internet, i was so upset. she may have issued a sorry statement but feeling of disappointment is still there. anyway, here's my message to candy, before setting foot into a another territory it is important for you to learn one's culture and a little history. from that little knowledge it would help you know more of who are with. it is your utter ignorance which give you in.
apology accepted and would suggest you know make outreach programs to the poor people of manila or your place as they needed it much than we do in the cordillera.

Don't crucify me ok? But i think some people are just overreacting. She's a stand up comedian. What do we expect? They should have anticipated that she might hit a raw nerve. That's how it is for stand up comedians. It's like in comedy bars, if you're hot tempered and you're getting picked on, then you lose. Candy apologized. That would be enough. We must remember that she's a mother too to a special child. She's making a living out of making people laugh. Just imagine what she's been feeling everytime people make fun of special children. She's can't sue everybody right? She just swallowed everything. Banning her or suing her is kind of ridiculous. Of course i can't speak for the Igorot people because i don't know what they have been through. So again, don't crucify me. lol!

Hi cecillecarmela!
I definitely agree with you. We should always be careful in what we are saying particularly for our celebrities who entertains people. There is even one saying regarding this that we should think a million times before we say anything.
I think our stand up comedians should really have a written script of their acts before they perform. I also think that they should be innovative in thinking jokes without the expense of other people.
Poor Candy, even her apologies could not erase the humiliation that she have made to all Igorot natives.

unfortunately jokes seem to be funnier to most people if a certain person is being laughed at.. i guess there's nothing wrong about it but celebrities should also know their limitations.

It should serve as a lesson not only for her, but also for other celebrities who are not cautious about the words that come out from their mouths.

exactly! thanks for the response :) because as what i observed most celebrities are acting superior as if they don't have responsibilities over their fans and people and that's what annoys me.

for anyone wondering what this discussion is about this is the wiki :-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igorot
and the offence was the fact Candy said on a show "i am not Igorot i am human". Which is very offensive and I cannot see how anyone can justify saying something like this there is simply no excuse. Personally I dont watch a lot of the shows in the Philippines because of people like this who have too big an ego and love to flaunt theyre excess wealth to the majority who are infact struggling to feed theyre families everyday.

It's good to know that foreigners like you also have a nationalism in our country :) thanks for the response and I really agree with you it was really an offensive remark and that should be a lesson to all Filipino celebrities and ordinary Filipinos as well that they should really watch their words first before saying something.

What happened to Candy Pangilinan is unintentional. But then she hurt the feelings of those people who never expected here to say such words. I just watched the incident on the news and I saw here crying very hard and very apologetic of what she said. She said she did not meant to hurt their feelings and she just want them to be happy because after all she is a comedian. Every people has different perception on each individuals words. We all have different interpretation and she was misinterpreted. Anyway that is a big lesson to everyone to really watch out their words. Not only to all celebrities but to each and everyone of us. We should never tell jokes that could mean something else to others. That incident happened once and it should never happen again so that we won't be facing a problem. I wish that everything will be okay soon for the actress Candy Pangilinan because I saw her really apologetic deep from her heart. And I believe she will be very careful next time with her words.

Pangilinan's apology was surely hard for her, and i have really nothing against her. the fact that she admitted her mistakes and say sorry for it was okay, what i am trying to say is that this incident should serve as a lesson to other celebrities that next time they should be more watchful of their words and they should know their limitations.

I haven't really heard what hurtfule words she did say that insulted the whole Igorot community. Well I guess the lesson is well learned by these artist in particular and I guess she made a public apology already in tears which I believe is a sincere effort from her. I think the local government planning to pursue a case with her should also reconsider their plans of pushing their complaints to the courts. I think this is a waste of time just to prove their point. The person has already apologized what more do they want from her?

We don't know what was really in her mind when she said that. I don't think it was deliberate on her part to insult the Igorots. She said she was thinking of an Igorot statue (or maybe for lack of better reasons). But she already apologized, so that is the most important.

Celebrities are also human. They're not perfect and they also commit mistakes.
I think what's important is that she has realized that what she's done has offended people and it's good that she's took accountability for what she did & apologized for it. That was really courageous of her. I'm sure she's learned so much from that experience, it's just too bad that she had to learn the hard way.

If I was here four months ago, I should have said that this is the worst kind of humiliation I ever heard from a popular showbis figure. It is so funny that this person who came from the urban area is so dumb in understanding his line of business and our philippine history that even a simple term like the word "Igorot" seemed did not cross her mind since birth. I pity her for her ignorance to the extent of losing the support and access from the most beautiful and cleanest city in the country. I salute our city council for their judgment and immediate action.
Igorot means "people in the maountain" so this word could also be applied to other tribes in other parts of our archepelago although this identity was already taken by our cordellera brothers so the word Igorot would eventhualy refer to them so be carefull next time about humiliating our forefathers identity in the Cordellera, we are not only in Bguio but also in Mt. Province, Benguet, Abra, Kalinga, Apayao, Ifugao, some part of Isabela, Cagayan and Quirino and Nueva vizcaya and all part of the globe like in the USA, Europe and Canada to name a few.
For me Igorot symbolises our unique culture of humility, beauty, kindness, respectfulness, Godliness, wisdom and intellect. We also have that unique ability to settle problems through the guidance of our respectable and wise elders. Most of all we are not corrupt people. We are respectable.
Let the ban stays with atleast three years for Candy Pangilinan that fair for me.
