How frequent do you add a post to your blog? How many words per post?

I notice that many blogs started off with a lot of postings in the first two months. The bloggers are very hardworking and conscientious to post every day, sometimes 2 to 3 times a years.
As the blog matures, they post less and less. Some blogs have an average of 4 posts per month, that means the bloggers only post one article per week.
I have gotten tired of daily postings, I can't see how I can maintain daily posting for a whole year. As far as I can see, there is no blog with more than 360 blog posts a year. And I want to experiment with weekly posting, that means one very long post per week, instead of 7 shorter posts per week.
Can you share how long have you been blogging? How frequently do you add a post to your blog? What is the average word count per post?

Hello there! You knew I'd drop in and comment... can't miss your excellent discussions!
Originally, I aimed for a daily post on every blog, even when I was maintaining five or six. Now, though, I only maintain two (plus occasional posts on another) and aim for a post every two days or so. Daily is also good, but I've found that a longer post less often works just as well (as you so rightly pointed out in another discussion somewhere). This is particularly true if your 'audience' is mostly in another time zone - it gives them more time to find one post before you slap another up.
Since I'm doing paid blogging on two other sites and working on a BIG freelance editing project at the moment as well, I find that's quite enough for me: any more and I start to run out of ideas, get tired and feel annoyed.
I don't know how well a weekly post would work. Bear in mind that I don't monetize my main blog any more. I suppose the success of a bigger post would depend on your readership and how you publicise it - Digg, Reddit, Stumble and so on would become more important on longer, less frequent posts, I would think?
All your experiments keep making me think too much. My brain hurts now.

Oops, forgot word count. Paid blogs 300-400, my own are longer. Generally 500 for a qwerk.com review and more for scrawlbug.com (last one was up around 700, I think). I don't really count them, though.

Hi Spike, a weekly post works well for Grizzly. I check his blog archive, he updates his blog at an average rate of a post per week last year (based on his blog "make money for beginners").
He started the beginner blog in December of 2006. When the blog was new, he updated it daily or once in every two days. In 2007, there were 88 blog posts. In 2008, there were a total of 56 blog posts. He slackens this year, till date only 14 posts.
But his post is terribly long, at least 1,000 words, sometimes longer.
Since my blog is newer, either I update more frequently at the same post length, or update longer post with weekly frequently.

It'll be really interesting to see the results of this experiment - and your other one, leaving those two keyword posts to see which attracts more interest!

My blog varies. It all depends on my inspiration! Sometimes, I post a couple of times a day. Sometimes, it is only once per day. Other times it is only a couple of times per week.
If you are blogging only for yourself, do what ever makes you happy!
If you are blogging for an audience, shorter, more frequent posts are best. Many people get intimidated when they see a long blog post. When this happens, many of them simply wont read it!
The other thing to consider is that some people check blogs frequently. When they see that you arent posting much anymore, they may stop checking your blog altogether.
With my blog, the posts that get the most views are the shorter ones. Pictures are also a huge attraction. When people see pictures, they are more likely to read! I have also noticed that if I go away for a week, people stop checking my blog.

I blog on about four different sites. Ideally, I would like to update them each everyday but life sometimes gets in the way of your blogging plans. I do, however, accept for last week when I was bedridden (thank God that's over) and the week before because I was in D.C. doing activism update at least one everyday.

Hi Cripfemme, glad to hear that you recover. Bedridden for a week is not fun! Hopefully you have someone to take care of you, brought you chicken soup, tea and coffee, toast and butter.
Glad that you are able to share your experience now. I have not seen any blog with daily update, unless they have a few writers. I can't imagine having 4 blogs, having 2 is already quite taxing.

I blog about hobbies and interests I have and even then I find it hard to keep coming up with content. But I have 30 some blogs so I get myself a little stress every so often.
I have been blogging for a couple of years now but most of my blogs aren't a year old yet. I do have about 6 or 7 that have been going for more than a year, those are the ones I earn my living from.
I post at the least 3 times a week on each blog with a minimum of 200 words, usually more.

Hi WebMann, how do you manage to handle 30 blogs? How much do you earn from blogging to justify the effort to maintain all 30 blogs?
Even for one blog, to constantly update is quite an effort. Unless using PLR articles. Even then, there is still the effort of rewriting to make it original.
200 words post 3 times a week is manageable for one blog, but for 30 blogs, that means 90 blog posts per week. That is quite awesome!

Well truthfully there are times I get stressed over the amount of content I need to come up with.
When I first started blogging I wasn't making enough to buy unique content so I had to write a lot and I also used private label rights articles to save time.
I use BlogDesk software to create my blog posts, to add images and I can even set the time and date I want the post to appear. It's great for those days when I am not going to be home. I can have the posts set days ahead and they only show on the date and time specified.
Once I was earning enough to call it a living I was at the point that I could start paying people to write article posts of 300 and 500 word posts on the topics I want help with.
This has given me the opportunity to help a few here at Mylot earn more by writing unique articles. It's a win-win situation in my eyes. I get content at a great price, make a few new friends and help others make their living online.

Wow Webmann, not many people manage to make a living from blogging, much less to pay ghost writers to write unique content for them. Do you think search engine will index those blog posts less than 300 words?
Writing is easy and enjoyable. Writing for blog is slightly different from other forms of writing, have to always pay attention to keyword density, long tail keywords etc. Yesterday I spent whole day writing 2 long postings for my two blogs.
Fortunately Blogger has a built in system to change the timing for posting.

It depends on how much you like blogging. Of course as you get started you have to establish your blog, so you have to be more vigilant when it comes to posting. I've been blogging since 2002, but I shut down my first blog about a year later. I started blogging again in 2006, but that was just in MySpace. I didn't really get back into the swing of blogging until 2007. I don't do a word count when it comes to posts. Most of the time I even include pictures. Anyway, for my personal blog (http://spinninglovelydays.blogspot.com), I try to update it everyday, but I don't fret if I don't get to. With my work-at-home blog (http://wahmtravails.blogspot.com), I update based on what's going on in my work-at-home life, so I admit posts here are a bit more sporadic than those of my personal one. My cooking blog (http://kitchennewbie.blogspot.com), I update this based on my activities in the kitchen (there are also lots of pics here). :)

Hi Wahmivy, thanks for sharing. It's a pity that you did not continue the blog that you start in 2002, by now the blog will be very established and need minimum maintenance on your part.
I agree that adding picture is a great alternative to writing. It is easier and more captivating. Thanks for sharing your blogs.

I used to be very addicted to blogging but about 3 weeks ago, I got blogged and my blog post weakened. I can still remember myself posting at least 3 entries per day. When I'm in the mood to blog, I usually make an entry with more than a thousand words. But as the days went by, I lessened the words and summarized my posts because I'm afraid that my readers might lose interest in reading it because it's too long. I've been blogging since September 2008 and I've had no regrets regarding it. Blogging is a fun and nice way to express yourself and let your feelings out. It's like a shock absorber that you can count on whenever you feel sad, depressed, or happy. I love blogging but unfortunately, I lost interest in it. I now make an entry every week. While in the past, I used to post 1 entry every 2-3 days. What a huge change, right? But I'm hoping against hope that my interest in blogging would come back.
And oh, you can check my blog on my profile. The link is there.
This is such an interesting discussion. Thanks and happy Mylotting to you!

Oh, what I meant about the word "blogged" on the first line of my response was "bored". Just a typo error =) Sorry about that.

I tend to write at least five posts a day. On a bad day I'll only manage three. When I have to I take a day off and post none...but generally I post on my blog daily. I dunno how many words per post, but I do alot of tags, and my content brings all the subs I need.
I've been blogging for a little over three years, ^_^'
...but then, I was a writer before I was ever a blogger. Fiction, series', novels. And it's been speculated that I could write an entire book (200-300 pgs) in a week if I were allowed to stay in my room with a computer for a week and didn't sleep much...and I'm inclined to say they're right, as my record time's been a month for writing books of that length when I wasn't as busy as I normally am.
That said, I'm sure you'll find your own niche. I wouldn't recommend others trying to do what I do. It's rather exhausting and not very fun once you burn out your inspiration at the end of the month after having it on for all that time. Take your time, pace yourself, experiment, see what works...think about your content, work on getting a reader base.

Hi xParanoiax, wow, you can really write. Probably writing is so much a part of your life as eating and drinking. Guess you are living in a world of your creation when you write non-stop.
Agree that writing should be enjoyable and fun, no point forcing myself to write till burnout. Now I aim to write just one single post per week, just a super long post.

This is such a good discussion. I thought I was having this 'problem' alone, but no.. Please bear with me, because I've always wanted to talk about this with anyone who blogs and since you are on this topic, here we go.
I started out blogging for about 1 and a half years ago or so. Close to 2 years. And in those times, I've been so active that I can confidently say, almost every day, I have around 1 post or so. But I only started to become active a year back. And right up to this date, I have around 408 or 409 posts. But...there's a but. I've since locked up my blog and put it on private. I feel so burned out. All of a sudden. You can also call it writer's block. I feel that I am obligated to blog and it is not an enjoyment for me anymore. There were also some expectations from others (though they did not make me do it), I sort of gained a small audience. And now that I've locked my blog on private, there are friends asking me why.
And I feel bad. I didn't want to keep the blog open, because I just don't feel like opening it. I wanted to lock it up first, and sort my thoughts. Only to open access once I have the energy to blog again some other time. Since 1 May, I've stopped and right up till today, I still am feeling burnt out. And when I came to your post, I feel like I could relate to it. And I've been micro-blogging since. Which means whenever I feel the urge to blog, I will type out some snippets on Twitter. But I do miss blogging very much, but I just couldn't find the drive to do it yet. Perhaps I need a holiday from blogging. I hope I'm not being too long-winded. Have a nice day...

...you are right, buddy. I didn't realize that it is a bit more to 500, ha! You are right. I was also thinking like you. Why pressurize myself when I could update wherever and whenever I want. Perhaps I'll open it up soon. Like you said, I shall give myself a bit more 'rest' before starting again. Recharging, so to speak. I think you are a good blogger and I hope that we can blog periodically so that we won't suffer a burnout. Thanks for your prompt response to my answer there.

haha Zed, if you pour some of the energy into your blog, you can reach 500 blog posts soon!
I hope you can open your blog, sometimes the comments from your followers can recharge your battery. I'm just 3 months into blogging and I feel the pressure, can't imagine blogging for 2 years and generating 400 posts.
Since your blog is a matured blog, I think you can update just one or two posts per month. Just sit back and relax for a while, recover from burnt out first. Sometimes the discussion in mylot can trigger the urge to write something.

Hi Zed, I'm a lazy blogger, just over 3 months, and I want to slacken. I think my blog will not hit 400 posts in 2 years. You have more patience and passion for blogging than me!
Keep up your blogging, it is a pity to give up blogging when your blog is a mature blog.

I try to post one day. There are times when I miss, that's when I try to make up for it by posting several on a day that I actually have several ideas for it :)
The least number of posts in a month I made was on my third month (5 posts for the whole month). I think that's because I haven't captured the "art of blogging" :P However, from then, my blog post number have fluctuated from a dozen to two dozens :D I mostly miss weekends since I make it a point not to use the computer as much as I could :D
Thanks for the response on my discussion!

Hi Oyenkai, you do have great motivation to post daily.
I notice most bloggers stop within 3 months, those who continue on cut down on posting, sometimes they run out of ideas, most of the times they face burnout.
I want to avoid that. Blogging should not be stressful, should be fun and enjoyable activity.
Inspiration does not come everyday, so now I'm motivated to write, I will set the publishing date in the future, so that the date of posting is consistent. Maybe you can try that, on those days that you can produce a few articles, upload the articles to your blog, but choose to publish them a day apart.

Well I am new to this site so I have only posted 2 times on a blog. My blogs are usually 7-10 words, not that long because you can double post on them so what is the point of posting long posts like this.

Hi Coke, you mean you just post 7 to 10 words? or do you mean 7 to 10 lines? Your comment here is more than 7 to 10 lines.
There are different bloggers teaching differently. Some bloggers explain that long post will result in more people reaching your blog through search engines. I do find that not all posts in my blog are indexed by search engines, only those longer posts get indexing.

Hi Adhyz, that's why you can blog for such a long time without suffering from burnout.
Many bloggers cannot sustain daily posting, and come to a point when they hate blogging. Now I aim for weekly posting. Even if I have mood to write a few blog posts, I will set the publishing date, so that the post appear at regular interval.
I like the way you write whatever on your mind, blogging is fun and not stressful this way.
