Has Anyone Ever Gone Into Business For Themselves?

I'm thinking of going into business for myself. Especially since these days finding a job working for other companies or people isn't exactly a horn of plenty. I want to go into business for myself as a private investigator (something I've wanted to do since I was in high school). I'm planning on at least starting off with relatively easy things like doing background checks for people and businesses.
Even though it's not required, I do somewhat have a background in criminal justice (graduated recently from college) I've always told myself that when I retired from working in law enforcement (I want to be a cop but I'm not physically fit enough at the moment) I would do this. But then I got to thinking since I'm having such a difficult time finding a job I can do, why not go ahead and at least try doing this and become a private investigator at least for the time being? So I'm going to at least try to see how it all turns out.
But has anyone here gone into business for themselves? What was it that you did or do and do you still do it? How did it all go?

First, I think you really have to be employed to earn some money for a capital to start your business. As for me, I worked for 2 years and started my quail business with my back pay as an employee. I still do it, as of now I'm earning just 1/8 of my usual salary but I find joy in what I do. Good luck on your business. Any business may do as long as you enjoy what you are doing. And of course, you have to have a capital to start one.

Unfortunately, a lot of the equipment typically used does cost quite a bit. Fortunately, that's the beauty of background checks. All you need is a certain (relatively small) amount of money that can be easily earned back plus much more per case. And since that's all I plan to do at first, at least on the side while I look for a full time job until I can support myself with this, there's not much needed to get started.
