Is dead sea really dead?

I see the dead sea on the earth map, and it is said that you won't sink down when you are on the dead sea. I want to go there for a trip! why is it called dead sea? Is dead sea really dead?

I rememeber talking about this in a geography lesson. I think it has something to do with the amount of salt in the water which is so much it makes you float on the water so you can't actually sink in it.
