My husband had a friend who raises bees, and this was in Canada, and he told them that there are so many diseases that they have to import the bees from California and other places or else you have to winter them and make sure the hives are protected against any disase. So beekeeping is a risky business and that is why honey is so expensive. Also if the regular bees disappear, then the only ones left would be those horrible vicious African killer bees and the beekeeping business will not be risky financially but even deadly.

hi Marcia Well I don't know if it is against the law in the UK but I don't think I have ever killed a bee anyway as I am usually running in the opposite direction. Even if they enter my house I try to shoo them out of the window with something. I wouldn't want to make them angry because then they would sting you

Well, I learned something today..I never knew that it was illegal to kill bees. IS this just in California or is it all over the states like that? Maybe it is because they are so many flowers in California and they need them to pollinate all those flowers.

No, I did not know this and here I'm in California. I've heard that bees have been dying off mysteriously for a while now, but I had no idea that it's against the law to kill them. Interesting! So what happens to a person if a bee happens to sting them? Will they be fined? Arrested? Because as it goes most bees die after they sting someone. Yeah, silly question I know, but I just had to ask! LOL By the way, my weekend was good. It was 102 degrees earlier in the day, so it was a hot one!

Yes, I have heard that too. But I wonder why do the die when the sting people, I think that is weird? I wonder what the reason is, I know that some people are allergic to bees, they will break out in hives.

Wow. I have never heard that. Learn something new everyday I guess. I am not sure if it is against the law here in Texas. However, if I see one i'm gonna kill it because I am allergic. I most definitely could plead self defense. lol. My weekends going great. Enjoy whats left of yours. :-)

Gee, I've never heard of killing bees being illegal out there. In some ways, I don't find that surprising though. I don't remember what exactly is causing it, but there is a huge decline in the bee population out west. Bees are extremely necessary for food production and plants. Without bees there is no pollenation of the plants, and you get the greenery but no fruit to them (ie tomatoes, garden veggies, fruit trees, etc) I know last year I had a problem in my own garden with not enough bees pollenating my plants and they wouldn't develop any veggies on them! After chatting with others I finally tried hand pollenating with a paint brush and had that work. Much easier with bees and mother nature doing the work!! We used to keep bee hives at the farm here for the crops. But...the bee guy no longer does that out here (retired?) so we have to rely on the bee population that we DO have. Outside of bees being a nusiance around the house and yard, they are so important in the grand scheme of things! My weekend? Got my first crop of asparagus (I'm the only one in my family who likes it, so I'm in heaven lol) The tree above the asparagus patch is really humming with bees in it, so I don't think there'll be a lack of bees here this year.

I read somewhere ...maybe a year or 2 ago that whole bee colonies were dying for unknown reasons and that if it continued there was going to be a shortage of bees that are necessary to cross pollinate plants. I am going to guess that this is the answer. I am in NY and have never heard of such a law. My brother is in Ohio...in Cleveland or somewhere around there. You anywhere close?

It is a big thing out here - not sure if it is illegal persay, but bees pollinate. We can't have vegetation growth without bees. THey actually have huge bee farms out here.. and the bees are "leased" to farmers to pollinate their crops and grow the foods properly. They even have "bee theives" out here.. people that steal the bees and sell them on the "black market". Farmers have to have bees....wild vegetation havs to have bees. have you seen that kids movie called "the Bee Movie"? THat literally tells the story! I had watched a thing on the discovery channel about this and hte problems we would have if there weren't bees, so when I say this movie, it was like putting the words into action... that movie actually tells what happens without bees! It is the perfect analogy. Just swat them away, don't kill them. They are more afraid of you than you are of them and will only react if threatened. We raised bees as kids - just for fun and enough honey for the family... they aren't the treat everyone thinks they are. Now granted.. these are domestic bees.. Killer Bees have been migrating up from the southern hemisphere for years now and have settle in border states and on up - here and there. Now those are a danger! They kill the good bees.. in addition to many other things!

I never thought about it either! I means they are just bees... who'd a thunk they were so important to the "cycle of life"! But that show was amazingly informative of something so simple being so important and necessary! I moved this last week... just got PC back up on line - changed ISP's and all that! Still unpacking....but couldn't stay away for long!

Hey there Marcia Scott. This is indeed something i have never heard before. I know i don't even live in America, so it is reasonable to assume that this is not the most popular law there, but i wonder, what is the penalty for killing a bee ? Do they fine you, do they put you in jail ?

I have not heard that killing bees is against the Law. It might be the case in a particular area like in California. In India, its against the law to kill wild animals like tiger and lions as these animals have become rare and are going to be extinct.

I know the reason for this. Bees are on the endangered list. They are very important to our earth, without bees, most of our crops would fail. We need bees to polinate our flowers, they are the only creatures out there that are able to do so. There was a study done recently and the number of bees had dropped so dramatically, that they had to be put on the endangered list, therefore it is against the law to kill them. Personally I don't believe in killing bees, if you leave them alone, they leave you alone. Just keep in mind that a bee won't sting you unless it has no other choice, once they do, they die. I know that there are a lot of people out there that are afraid of bees and my advice to them, is not to be. A bee is only interested in one thing, FLOWERS. They could care less about you, unless you have a beautiful garden in which case they might become a frequent visitor. I know that personally I plant my flowers with the intention of attracting bees to my garden. I have warned my children about the dangers of getting to close but they are not too afraid of them. They too know that without bees, we wouldn't have flowers. I hope that my response helps.

You explain quite well, I wonder why Bees like to come around you when someone has on Perfume or Cologne? I notice if I have or Perfume it attracts Bees. I never really thought aout What Bees does for the Earth. It's amazing. Sometimes Bess will make a Beehive right on the Porch. That was what my girlfriend was saying, that she has a lot of Bess in her backyard, and she was going to get something and kill them, then she said it was against the law to kill Bees.

I am not sure what the laws are like in California, but this sounds a bit far fetched How long could somebody possibly get for bee homicide? I find it a bit hard to beeleive if I am honest

I haven't heard of it but it would certainly makes sense, because of the fact that bees are on the decline and they are needed in the ecosystem, http://queenbeejan.com/beeprob.htm

Yes i have heard that too.Bees contribute a large part of our lives actually, because they help in pollinate. They are here and i think that is the reason the flowers and treess are too. They help and put into large eforts to cary the nectar, they suck the nectar and that makes the flower bloom for some more days and they pollinated that why the nature blooms too.. well i have not studied much or at all about them but i know this.
