The best way is to keep hands washed! Even the best handwasher is still going to catch a cold/virus eventually, especially if you have kids or visit alot of public places.

Colds are no fun, the cough is even worse when you can't seem to get rid of it. I was like that for many years. My cold would turn into Broncile pneumonia every winter, nothing I did was working. I felt like I was coughing up a lung each time I would have a coughing spasm. I went to the doctors many times for this and finally went to a new one because I had moved. Well.. this one told me get some Vitamin C, a big bottle of it. Then he said take up to 15,000 mgs per day. Yes, I know thats alot. He said take it everyday even in the summer, but in the summer I could cut back down to like 5000-8000mgs a day. I said ok, I was willing to try anything. He also prescribed a cough med so that I wouldn't hurt so much from the cough.
Well, I went out and bought a large bottle of C, each tablet was 1000mgs. I took three in the morning, three in the afternoon and three at night, everyday. That winter the cold still hung on but it wasn't as bad or as long. The thing is though I kept taking the C as he told me. By the next winter, I got a cold but I didn't develop the bad cough, or the pnuemonia, I was so relieved. So I kept taking the C and I have since. I don't take as much as I did then, still I take average of 4000mgs a day. I hardly get colds anymore and I DO NOT get that God awful cough anymore..
That is what I would suggest to you, oh and drink at least a glass of water with the vitamin C, I did, don't know if that helped or not, just something I was doing.
I was told because of the bad cough for so many years prior, if I get it that bad again I may loose my voice completely, so you see why I continue with the C.
I also take other vitamins as well.

Maintaining high levels of vitamin c will keep your immune system up. I use a product called emergen-c from Alacer. Also a zinc supplement will boost your immune system. The herb echinacea boost the immune system, but you can only take it for about 6 weeks at a time. Also, if taking echinacea, do not get too much sunlight.
