I usually like to bring back a little memento of a journey. I have no set idea of what it will be when I start out: generally something will suggest itself while I am there. I try to avoid the normal touristy stuff - miniature telephone boxes, models of London buses or the Eiffel Tower, the tiny and useless pottery with the name of the place on ...
The kind of things I look for are those which represent the area or country I am travelling in, preferably something that a person who lives there would buy and use. I have had proper clogs from Holland, made to fit me, which were very handy and comfortable as garden shoes; I have records of traditional music, small regional cookery books (if they are in a language I can read) and pottery jugs and bowls made in a local tradition which are useful as well as ornamental.
Some tourist ware is actually quite collectable and can sometimes fetch a good price on eBay, so, if I happen across an antique shop or bric-a-brac stall while I am on holiday, I scour it avidly for small pieces that might fetch a good price when I get back home. Sometimes these things hold fond memories and never actually make it to auction.
When the children were young, we encouraged them to keep holiday diaries and to paste in all sorts of ephemera: pamphlets about attractions we visited, postcards, bus and train tickets, even dried seaweed, shells and sand from the beach. These diaries occupied many an evening and a rainy day and are now treasured possessions to be rediscovered with delight from time to time.

When I was younger I had a collection of postcards from around the world, and when I visited a new country or a new city I always bought some postcards for my collection. When I moved I gave my collection of postcards to a friend, and I don't collect postcards any longer. Now I usually buy music instead of postcards. I collect music from around the world, and before I visit a new country I try to find some information about the local bands or singers so that I can buy some cds while I am there.

I like to buy something when we travel. We don't spend that much but try to find something that reminds us of our visit. It doesn't even have to be a souvenier because if we do something like have a nice dinner out, we may buy something from a store nearby to remind us of that special time.
Now when we go to Disney, we always buy a lot of things! We've learned to find bargains though and go to the outlet mall or find sales, get discounts, etc. We love collecting Disney things.
