Did anybody of you know what really an Internet speed is?I got a new broadband internet connection three days before and the service provider specified that the speed is 100kbps. I know it is not so good, but since i need internet for simple browsing, I thought it is sufficient. But, after getting connection, my speed of downloading files from internet (for example, some songs, movies etc.) are happening at about 10kbps only. It is 10 times low than the specified speed. I discussed with friends and they are also mentioning the same. Then why service providers are telling that much higher internet speeds? Where really that speed is occurring? During page loading or during file downloading?Anybody know the fact behind this? Pl share here.

In my knowledge, the speed that the service provider told you is a speed if only you were the only one who is accessing the Internet, it is the maximum speed that can be provided by the service provider for you. So if you want to feel better connection, just try to access the Internet at off-peak hour or at the time while everybody is not using their Internet connection (e.g. from midnight till dawn). :)

You should first get the basics right . Remember this , Eight bits(b) = one byte (B) So , 100kbps (kilo bits per second ) = 100/8 = 12.5 KB (kilo BYTES). You should get ideally 12.5 KB/sec. But due to practical conditions , you will get 10-12.5 KB/sec. It may also go down , if there is heavy traffic. These connections are outdated. Now , broadband is the new trend which is given you at affordable rates . You are in coimbatore . Get BSNL connection. it is good. you get 2Mbps (mega bits per second ), you will get 250KB/sec as the speed ideally. Due to practical condtions , you will get 200 to 230 KB/sec which is 20 times faster than your present connection. BSNL plan starts with 125 rupees (150 MB) download and another plan 250 Rs (I GB download).

I have my internet speed at least 230.4 Kbps. I m using internet dial up. At night my connection is better. But in day work activity its became slower. the internet speed also depend on what connection that you have, ISP or Wifi connection. I preffer not using free public connection like hotspot. Because in some case it is not safer. If downloading a file seems like slower use your connection for download only, not to browse or anything. Also, It s depend on your PC or laptop anyway. In my dial up, this tips useful for me.

May I ask whether you are only seeing 10kbps for every single download? And that it has never comes close to the mid tens of kbps? If so, then you probably have fallen into the trap of "kbps" vs "kBps" where the former refers to bits while the later refers to Bytes. Considering 1 byte = 8 bits. You can see some 1/10th of the original you are expecting.

Internet speed is the instance relation of how fast you can view a web page in an instance through a medium.A lot of factor can be related to this slow down and why we cannot actually get the maximum speed subscribed. Considering simple browsing at that 100kbps is good but when you start to include downloading the speed gets only 10kbps,downloading might be in a different way as simple browsing. Since you need a lot of bandwidth to do download, that limits to a lesser speed. Other factors can affect this, number of users in that type of connection might end up in dividing the bandwidth to each. Medium used to that connection also affect it. That is in terms of technical explanations relative to resistivity and distance in delivering packet data. Though in all of my searches of ideas through the net, this is might not be all. try to read some forums that do have great knowledge on telecommunications.
