With so many other people on the internet creating and maintaining blogs, the single best thing you can do is to be different. Offer a layout which is easy to navigate and comfortable, and provide something different for your readers, if you want to get readers, you have to offer them something new and different.

Well the first thing you should do is pick a subject to base your blog around, make sure it is something you are interested in and hopefully passionate about. By doing this your enthusiasm for what you write about will show and that will help to keep visitors reading than having a post which lacks any real personal passion. Plus if you are interested in the subject you will always want to write more posts.
Next before you even start writing I would seriously recommend doing some research into Search Engine Optimization (SEO). By doing this before you start you will have a much better idea how to craft a blog/ post which has the best chances of appearing high up in search engines but also give you the best chance of earning money, if that is what you plan to do.
As already mentioned make your blog look original and most importantly easy to use. If someone can't work their way around your blog with minimal hassle then they are likely to clear off and not come back.
What I would also recommend doing is taking a look at other blogs which interest you, which are popular and those which will be in the same niche as yours. By doing this you can learn very quickly as to what makes a good blog, such as responding to comments, and what makes a bad blog, posts which are unoriginal and are generically written.
