In the sentence "Then the sh!t hit the fan!The woman's husband had found out, phoned my friend, and threatened to kill him.", what's the meaning of "the sh!t hit the fan"?

LOL!
um..it means what you were trying to hide is now known,and trouble is coming your way,basically.
if you throw sh!t at a fan,it splatters everywhere.

"the sh!t hit the fan" means that:-
1) everything went wrong ..
2)things were no longer in control..
3)when something bad is found out leading to bad consequences..
